Howdy ya'll,

After having played a Weissenborn-style guitar years ago, and now pedal steel for the past 1.5 years, I've been wanting to pick up a vibey old lap steel that I can easily throw in a gig bag for little gigs, rehearsals, and practicing picking and bar technique a bit on the go...

So - after a little research I recently took a chance on a 50's Gretsch-branded Supro/Valco lap steel on eBay - the price was right and it's supposedly all original, so I figured it was worth a shot as I've heard that these old Electromatics (and their Valco/Supro-branded counterparts, the "Comet") actually can have decent sounding pickups and are fairly capable little steels even though they were the "student" model of their day...

Anyways, I digress. This particular guitar has a knob that's cracked on the inside and won't function anymore. I'd like to find a replacement, but so far looking at StewMac and AllParts, etc. hasn't turned up a match...

Anyone have any leads? Here's a link to the eBay auction with some close up photos of the steel and the knobs...

Thanks in advance!

Congrats on your new old guitar. Knobs seem to pop up from time to time. This was a recent thread:

In there I suggested Antique Electronic Supply. They might have something close:

HTH. Good luck in your search.

Thanks Michael. Those black ones are close, for sure, and I'm not totally averse to the idea of just buying a new pair that I like and replacing both knobs either... this will be a working guitar, so outside of the pickup/pots I'm not too concerned if new parts need to go in.

I'm also curious to see what kind of shape the tuning machines are in, but that's another discussion entirely...

I'll keep browsing too... but thanks for the link!

In the past, I've had a little luck in going into a radio store or a junk store and asking if they have a box of knobs. Sometimes you can find a cool looking set for not too much $$.

Not a bad idea either Paul! It should arrive tomorrow/today (nearly midnight in CO) so I'll be able to take a closer look at everything and hopefully figure out a good way to go....

Guitar arrived safe and sound, and I'm pretty pleased! Great shape for it's age minus a couple things here and there... mostly just needs the new knobs and a good cleaning I think, although I'll keep my eye on the tuning machines...

BUT - it has the old Amphenol screw-in jack still... I'm thinking of getting an adapter to avoid modding the guitar... anyone have any experience with these, or know where a better place to purchase would be? Also considering just having a 1/4" jack installed but keeping things stock is always kinda nice...

Elderly still sells that style of cable:

It seems to me that they used to also offer an adapter, but my quick search didn't turn one up. If that's what you want, you might give them a call.

HTH. Enjoy the new guitar! Cool

Thanks Michael! I was actually able to have a local tech make an Amphenol to 1/4" cable for me for cheap, which has allowed me to test the electronics, which sound great!

That is, once the connection is solid... that old Amphenol seems like an accident waiting to happen on a gig, so I will still probably have another fellow install a standard 1/4" jack and be done with it.

Now to explore the world of E6 and C6 lap steel! Smile
