During my enthusiastic days as a wanna-be photographer........I never could figure out why the majority of photographs in the quality photography magazines. They more often than not were accompanied by lengthy descriptions about lenses and other stuff.........info' I didn't understand.
I think this would be a worthwhile suggestion for we steel players to give some tho't to.
For example: RED RIVER VALLEY, Emmons Dbl 10, thro'
a Fender silver face twin reverb amp, 12 or 15 inch, with Bigsby Vol-Tone foot pedal, etc. etc.
It's really too mystifying to try and guess what the player was using in order to get that fabulous tone.
What do you think? |

Good Idea Ray! Often I find myself asking: I wonder what tuning is he or she is playing? The other things you mentioned would be helpful as well. I think it would minimize inquires on the forum by readers of a post with a minimum effort on the part of the sender.

When I was playing bass in rock bands in the early 70's, my favorite lead guitarist, Dave Elson, played an Ibanez Artist through 4 10" speaker Fender Bassman. The Ibanez was a Gibson ES 335 copy, btw. His sound was fantastic! The Bassman case was in turquoise blue, padded Naugahyde! _________________ Jack Aldrich

Great idea for the tuning mention.
Equipment setup is nice as well but as far as amp sounds technology is such that the sound you are hearing is not usually just the amp. It's more often the effects pedals or mixers or compressors and EQ's etc.
By the time you see a performance or a recording it's original signal is so altered that even if you had the same amp you could not achieve the same tone as your heroes.
Now if we all decide to go back to basics and simplify our setups then the amp sounds etc would make a difference but all too often I use to wonder why people didn't realise that tech has moved on so much that specific amps are not necessary. Eg. I have a boss me 25 that can mimic all of Boss' popular amp sounds that made the pop hits from Nirvana to Hendrix and Srv clones to red hot chilli peppers and even jazz greats like Wes. Amp modelling technology happened a long time ago and I can bet you that no one would know the difference if I used an amp model vs a traditional amp on a recording or even live. I have seen this as an audio engineer over the years.
Huge well known bands use amp modelling pedals or outboard rack units and peavey cabinets etc. and forums would still be filled with posts about what amp was that? Expecting to achieve the same tone. _________________ Stefan

I too like hearing the details on all the gear used. I am nuts about music gear. It's fun and interesting. I can't seem to ever get bored of it or run out of new things to learn or try. From guitars, pickups, amps, pedals, mics, strings and so much more. I try so many different combinations, it's fun. Hearing about what others are doing is great. |
