Just about all pedal steels have pole or blade pickups.
Why few, if any, horse-shoe pickups? |

Don't know if this is the "reason", but my take is a horseshoe pickup, or any pickup which covers the strings such as some of the Oahu and National lap/console steel pickups, would inhibit palm blocking/muting and playing close to the changer, since that section of the strings would be covered up. Stylistically, that would tend to force picking way further up the neck. Maybe fine for some styles, but I think many players (including me) prefer to be able to pick and block/mute anywhere along the strings to vary tonality.
Why don't most Tele players keep the lead pickup cover on? Same basic reasoning, although I have seen a (very) few players playing with that cover on. That's why many call them "Tele ashtrays". |

...makes sense, Dave. The 24th fret is about the position I use for a "home-picking-position" and do move up and down the scale.
Covering the strings as the horseshoe does is restrictive.
My hands are not really large, but I do notice this limitation on my Dual Eight Pro. with the trap. pups. |
