My '77 LTD 400 does the same thing, and always has. |

It's called "the Peavey Pop."
Most other amp makers design their amps not to do this, but Peaveys all do it. Unless your speaker is weak, or your amp is in trouble, I don't think it's harmful.

Put a set of OPA2134 chips in it. Problem solved !
I would bet someone has put the 2604 chips in at some time. The original 4558 had a slight pop. The 2604's were really bad.
The 2604's were in the Peavey factory mod.

Bill, the Session 400 did it too. No chips there. I think it's in how the power amp "wakes up."

On one of my Vegas channels...when my wife shuts off the amp while I am playing it. ..a regular occurrence. .lol.... the amp actually gets louder for about 200 ms...before it goes dead.
Its a real curiousity....makes me wonder what part of the amp would cause this. .. some sort of bias related thing perhaps.
I currently run OPA2604s.... not for much longer. .. |

I had a 1000 that did the same thing. My solution was simple: I just turned the volume off, then flipped the on button. It was still doing it's thing, but I could no longer hear it and it was never a problem. I think it is just a harmless quirk, but what do I know.
BTW I was in Herb Remington's shop in Texas right after I got my first Nashville 400. I was telling him I liked the amp except for the lack of good bass. He said I should have got the Vegas 400, which he said was pretty much the same amp, but in a larger cabinet and he thought the bass was much better in the Vegas |

I'd always worry that a "loud pop" might damage a speaker.

Nope, no way. The sound duration is so short, and of a moderately high frequency, that there's no danger at all of it causing damage to the amp or speaker. I agree it's a crappy design flaw, but at least it's only irritating.  |

The duration is short? That pop is slamming the voice coil and cone. I've always worried about that! Maybe I'm wrong,,,,, but,,,,,,

Ive had my vegas for about 5 years and this is the first year im able to enjoy the sound that comes out of it , best sound I have for a combo. Took a long time to find a good sound from it. Its definitly in there , brown burris chips from fox are in it , it pops but I keep the volume down when turning it on.

Every PV amp I've ever had, & I have had MANY, did that. If it DOESN'T do it, there's something wrong. My current Renown 1-15" does it when I turn it on, & My PV Blues Classic tube amp makes a reverse sucking type sound when I turn it OFF! The higher the reverb setting, the louder the pop. Go figure!
Just like if a Harley Shovelhead doesn't leak oil, or a Gibson guitar stays in tune, there's something wrong with it.
