Not sure if this is the right place for this question, but are there any tricks to replacing strings on a keyless Harmos? Having trouble getting enough starting tension to get to pitch within the travel of the tuner. Am I missing something obvious?

Thanks

Sorry I can't help...my Harmos has regular tuning pegs. I have heard that some have had problems with the keyless ones.

A friend showed me a wooden lever/pry bar he made to assist with stringing his keyless PSG. He considered this to be one fault with this particular make of keyless heads. It just basically allowed him to grip the string and yank/pry it tighter than bare fingers could before tightening the clamp.
I have no experience with anything keyless, Harmos or other, so I can only describe what I saw.

Thanks John. Absent some unknown trick, I've been thinking either some sort of tool to set initial tension or a modification to the hex head screws that hold the strings.

I have owned several keyless pedal steels, Sierra, Williams and GFI. Cut a 1/2 inch dowel about 3 inches long and drill a small hole through the middle. Put your string through and roll it a few times then wrap around string post and pull taught while tightening the nut or Allen cap screw. That should give enough tension to tune to pitch.

FWIW regarding keyless tuning mechanism,,,,it is not the pressure of the "grub" or set screw that should be relied on to hold the tension on the string,,,,,,as any cowboy knows, when he ropes a 1200-1500 lb animal,,,he better find a tree or fence post or ?? to take a turn on with the rope,,,or any sailor, when trying to hold a large vessel with a line,,,he needs to find a cleat or ?? to take a turn on. It's the "turns" on the string that holds MOST of the tension,,,,the more turns the string makes before having the end secured, the less pressure it takes to hold the end.

"keyless to the core"
