this is my latest build for a forum member. its a special one for sure as he is playing under a situation that would be insurmountable for the majority of us. he only has use of his right hand. the left arm holds his bar via a prosthetic device that he has crafted. after talking with him he let me know that one of the things he finds very cumbersome to do is to change strings! didnt mention playing...Winking so i approached this with the intent of making it as easy as possible to change strings and get to everything with the right hand. together we came up with the idea of mounting locking machines on the right side of the guitar as it lays in the lap. i wanted to use large tuners as they are easy to manipulate. they have a locking knurled nut on the back of them about as big as a nickle. i mounted them on 1/2" thick aluminum blocks i machined and raised the tuner off the face of the guitar enough so it would be easy to thread the string through the tuner...hold it with the pinky and ring fingers and then use the thumb and index to snug the locking nut...then let loose and tighten a little more and then wind it up!! i put several on like that with no problem. up at the neck end, the string threads through a hole so it wont come loose while working on the other end. the wood is 40 year old figured maple...a George L 10-1 pickup. it has a nice sound and great sustain!! scale is 23" and spacing is 3/8ths on both ends. the tuning is low to high D A D F# A D E F#. i dont play this tuning, but i worked out a beatles tune for a demo. http://www.mediafire.com/listen/tvsde8yrpby4vdg/Lucy+in+the+sky+lap+steel+%2345.mp3#45.mp3
