"The Spahn Ranch Boys" a real band just a few years back, from my neck of the woods.

"California Grassfield" who were close friends of mine. Early band of Pat Flynn (New Grass Revival and much Nashville session work) and Colin Kiffin (who later played steel in the house band at the Palomino. Red Rhodes became his close friend and protege, lent him my first Fender 400). They covered songs like 'Nowadays Clancy Can't Even Sing' which was the first single by the Buffalo Springfield.

Fender 400, Fender FM212, G&L ASAT.

Was part of a hippie-Christian store in Cotati, California (circa 1976) called THE EYE OF THE RAINBOW. May God love you.

Mouse And The Traps, a one hit wonder with a Dylan impersonation, which I can't remember the title of.

Yep; the Sixties, man. According to Wikipedia, "[Rudy] Martinez, who went under the moniker, '?', quickly cement[ed] himself as the group's creative force." They were still around in 2012, minus one member who passed away the year before. http://www.mlive.com/news/saginaw/index.ssf/2012/10/fifty_years_later_question_mar.html

I don't know if the Beatles played off the Crickets' name, but then we had the Byrds and the Tyrtles. (I forgot why they later changed it to the Turtles; maybe to avoid confusion.) I think the Electric Prunes' name came about because they were clowning around while thinking up a name, but they kept it. In 1970, Camel cigarettes had an ad parodying "Mod" groups, using the name "Electric Plums."

I might look up old Dave Barry columns where he uses the phrase "that would make a good name for a rock band," and name my band after something Dave came up with. (Dave also happens to be a guitarist with the Rock Bottom Remainders.) But we're probably just going to be the "Three-Chord Commanders." Laughing

I played for while for a band called "Live Music". The leader of the band told me that he named his band that because most clubs had signs that advertised live music. Free advertising.

I recently played a jazz gig in which everyone else in the band was named "Dave". No lie. I knew I had to do something with this unusual factoid, so I named the band (for one night only), "Jim Cohen and the Daves of Wine and Roses".

Used to front Stark Naked and the Car Thieves, which was predictably shortlived.

In suits. Carrying briefcases. Wink

Jim's other post, about the guys all named Dave, reminded me of a bunch of guys who played a couple of times at the weekly "hoot night" in a place where I hung out years ago. They called themselves "Everybody's Neil." (Could have been "Neal." I dunno.) I never found out if that was meant as "everybody is," or the possessive form. I don't remember them doing any Neil Young songs, but they seemed to be having a lot of fun with it. Smile
