My boy Luigi and I have been working on a "new style" cast aluminum Dustpan & matching 5 watt, cast aluminum Luigifier for my buddy Jeff Kearns ... Mr. Green

My new L&M Perpendicular Pickup ... named after my two girls - Ellie & Emmie ... has a "string thru" air coil (ala Fender Trap) and another air coil at 90 degrees from the trap coil... both coils were wound with bondable 38 AWG ... All housed in a steel Faraday cage with a cylindrical Halbach array of Neodymium-iron-boron magnets ...

An on-on-on toggle puts the coils into different combinations ... one is very articulate and smooth ... one is very "1930's" sounding ... one is robust and lush ...

This is the best pickup I've ever made !!!! Smile

The Luigifier ... a Class A, single ended amp ... sports a 5751 preamp tube, a 6V6 power tube & a 5Y3 rectifier tube (all NOS) ... an 8" Eminence hemp cone 4 Ohm speaker Laughing ... no negative feedback loop ... Jupiter capacitors ...

The Dustpan has a scalloped fretboard (I call it a "Doppler Effect fretboard") ... Laughing ... an integrated nut, bridge & string loader ... raised (3D) Black Onyx fret markers ... and Stewart Mac's "Restoration" tuning machines (had to buy a 6-on-a-strip set and cut it down to 4 ; and a 3-on-a-strip set) ...

Jeff is swinging by Tuesday to pick it up the day before Steve Miller Band's show at Wolftrap ... finished it all yesterday w/ 5 days to spare Mr. Green

What a brilliant build. How does the aluminium respond to temp. Changes???

I'm wondering also it would get pretty cold in winter practice.

I love the reflective surface 360 degrees.

The linear thermal expansion coefficient of Al is about the same as Bakelite ... Which is about 4-6x that of wood.

Without boring folks too much ... Wink

To go from say 25 C to 37 C (room temp to body temp) ... This 24.5" scale length will increase by about 0.0071" ... If it was made of pine it would increase by about 0.0013"

But, the change in temperature occurs pretty slowly because of Aluminum's relatively high (for a metal) Specific Heat Capacity and it's rather large mass ...

It'll detune, but slowly ... Giving the player a chance to tweak Wink

But if it is cold outside ... It'll lay across your lap like a slab of ice, for awhile Laughing

Here are the polystyrene sacrificial patterns ...

The first casting seized in the headstock ... So I chop sawed it up and tried again with two additional risers (spaghetti sauce cans and toilet paper rolls) Wink

Finished ramming in my official Santa foundry pants ...

The amp cabinet cast true the first time ... Smile

I'll be casting myself a 4 string "Tenor-pan" this summer to play at the HSGA Convention in Colorado ... The older I get, the fewer strings I need ... Laughing

Rick, that amp is so beyond steampunk I don't know what to call it except perfect. No cage needed.
The photo of your daughter reflecting in it is simply beautiful.

Thanks for all the kind words ...

Luigi is a boy, he just has long hair like his dad ... Laughing Cool ... Folks always say "what a pretty girl" ... And he usually lets it go (he's a very mature 4 yr old) ... But one day in Home Depot (his favorite store) ... This nice old lady walks up and says: "What a beautiful little girl" ... Luigi responded "I'm a boy ... I have a pecker " Whoa! ... She looked at me and started laughing so hard, I thought they might have to call for a cleanup on eisle 12 ... Shocked

Here's a couple photos of the new "L&M Perp" pickup ...

The bondable magnet wire is very cool stuff ... Pretty $$$ ... But there was no way to build what I had in my mind without it ... Here's the two coils that are in it ...

I can't resist a non-steel-related comment about Luigi.
Home depot--you've reared him right.

My dad took me into my first hardware store. Browsing thrugh files, he said
'Look at that flat bastard.' I knew he was trying to be funny and instructive (he was a PhD educator)
in a second-meaning association, but I was ahead of him in the study of humor and psychology.

Learnig art and craft is much more satisfying.
I commend you on your kids, and Ididn't realize how Mr. Green you were!
Remarkable casting operation with pure simplicity; hard to believe the amp is cast.

How much would one cost someone else? Priceless?

Wow.....what a time-consuming process this is. Thanks so much for sharing your pics and narrative. Fascinating.

Thanks too for the related stories of your kids. Always interesting to see how kids react when exposed to new and different things.

Last summer, it was the amp cabinet that took a few tries ... This spring it was the guitar ..

As you can tell by Luigi's expression ... He wasn't too pleased Laughing

Here's a little video of "Hana" I made this morning with my new Maximojo combo made by Rick Aiello. It's a bit better than the one we made at his house. Give it a look. Thanks.
