Yes, Virginia, you can have good country music...without stupid crunchy Teles, crashing drums and cymbals, and thrumming bass lines. I know! I've heard it!

Man, it is sooooooooooo nice to hear a steel up front and taking a prominent role in a recording for a change! It's like a completely different instrument than the minimalized drivel we've been led to believe is the way things should be.

"Less is more"? "Just play one or two notes that say something?"

Yeah, yeah. Bullhockey! We been doin' the "lay back" thing for 30 years. More is better! Play the durn thing like you want to get noticed, or you probably never will be.

Cool

Never said it was me. Wish it was. I feel sure some out there have it figured out though.

Gary Lee, the steel player is none other than Randy Beavers, Laney Hicks on vocal from the CD "Russless"

Bill, I don't hardly see how giving the information of the singer and steel players name would kill a thread. Shocked

I'm guilty of the overindulgence! In my da-fence, there was no one here at the house to stop me.

This was part of "Operation Russless", where a bunch of us got together to play a prank on Russ, where we recorded ourselves to a track then sent it in for an entry to a contest. All under false names! Lots of "up front' steel on the whole project, with the likes of Lloyd Green, Don Helms, Larry Sasser, Doug Jernigan, Ron Elliott, Joe Wright, Mike Sweeney, Johnny Cox, and John Hughey. Russ or Laney should have the complete CD with all my co-conspirators.

Many thanks to all, or apologies.
Randy

Randy, IMO, that's some of the best picking I've heard in a long time. It seemed that the whole band was spot on. Are you going to do a cd with this? Thanks in advance.

Ha! Here is Randy's post from early 2006 when this all happened: http://bb.steelguitarforum.com/viewtopic.php?p=170650&sid=e03da0da1765e4fe8866a4fc67961f77. If you scroll down a little there's a post from Laney with an address to buy the CDs. It was almost ten years ago though, I wonder if they still have some. I'd like to get a copy too. Thanks Randy, that's a hoot, and some super tasty playing on your part!
