I have a dead Emmons single coil PUP off the E9 neck of my D10 push-pull. I am wondering what's the prevailing wisdom on having it rewound lighter. I don't want to create a significant mis-match with my C6th neck. Specifically, I don't want to have to reach back to the amp and reset the tone knobs when switching necks.

The C6th neck PUP reads 19K ohms. Of course, I can't currently test the E9 PUP, but when I tested it in the past it was about the same as the C6th.

I am playing nowadays entirely through tube amps and I've read how lighter wound single coils on an Emmons Push-pull played through a tube amp, like a Twin, sounds really great. I love the sound of my set-up with the E9 neck at about 19K, but maybe I'm missing something even better.

Right now there is a True Tone single coil wound to 18.5k installed in the guitar, and it sounds virtually identical to what I remember the Emmons PUP sounding like. But I want to restore the guitar to original condition with two Emmons PUPs.

What do you think about having the E9 PUP rewound to about 14.5 or 15k? I don't want to touch the C6th PUP as it works just fine. Would that create problems with tone balance when switching necks?

One thing to remember is that the volume of the pickup will decrease with less winds, which would set up a level imbalance between the two necks. You might be able to compensate with pickup height, but that depends on whether you have enough height adjustment and whether it changes the tone too much.

I'd go lighter. I have a 14.5 in one P/P and a 15.5 in the other. The 6th neck pickups are about 1K "hotter". 15.5 and 16.5 respectively.

One of the P/P's had 22k pickups in both necks. It was the deadest sounding guitar I'd ever heard. It sounded so bad I was planning on getting rid of it. By chance I had a 15.5 pickup here and tried in the 9th neck and the whole guitar came to life.

If you are considering a Humbucker, call Dave Beaty at Telonics. They are making a really neat pickup that works very well in an original Emmons.

I hear Jerry Wallace is a little under the weather right now. If you speak to him, tell him I said hello.

paul, maybe you could look into a compromise setting like 17.5 ohms. buddy's blade used that for many years and your guitar is quite similar to that one.
your steel already sounded good. this might give you that slightly lighter pretty tone without making a big imbalance.

I wouldn't want to go below, 17.5 on E9, Paul. in my opinion. You don't want to get your tone brittle or thin sounding. I have an 18.5 True tone on my EMCI, and the tone is AWESOME. Just my opinion.

Jerry Wallace hasn't returned my phone call. Perhaps he's under the weather as suggested above.

Billy Knowles suggested I get the PUP rewound by the Emmons company, but their phone is disconnected. Anyone have a current phone number?

Fortunately the True Tone that's in the guitar now is sounding pretty good, so at least I can play gigs.

I'm thinking I really shouldn't drift too far from what's in the C6th neck, which is about 19K. I can maybe go down to 17.5K, but probably no lower, or I will have a noticeable imbalance of tone and volume when switching necks.

Emmonsguitars@hotmail.com should get them. I think they are still moving.

I think Jerry Wallace is still not feeling well...
