Our forumite Dean Parks posted this lately and it's a great read, and he was a huge part of it...great to have him here!

Thanks for posting that, it brought back lots of memories! I worked/was on staff at two of the studios he mentioned in the article, The Sound Factory on Selma and Ivar and Allen Zentz Recording just south of Santa Monica Blvd on Orange in the late 70's. Unfortunately I was on the other side of the glass engineering, not playing on iconic tracks. I met Michael Jackson at Zentz, he was just a gangly, good natured kid then. It was also a mastering lab, and most of the Casablanca stuff was mastered there on a Neumann lathe. So Donna Summer was in also. I got the gig there because I had been trained on the Telefunken 2" 24/32 tape machine.
I moved over to film mixing after a fellow engineer got on over at Warner Bros. He saw the writing on the wall and urged me to make the move because, in words I'll never forget"...records will kill you..."
