How many of you picking on a Carter? Just curious. I am having one built, it should arrive mid month - November. My first brand new pedal steel. D-10, Black, 8 X 5, basically standard, one or two wierdo pulls. E-66 up front, 10-1 rear.
I have heard several that sound great, David Spires, Jr. Knight, Bobby Black, Jeff Newman, Milo Deering.
Who else do we have out there?

I just bought a new Carter SD 10, ordered at St Louis convention ,but having never played before what influenced my decision was their web site.
Just starting is kinda like buying a car and having never driven before or knowing how to maintain one, but they do have a good web site with lots of information on how things work and how to maintain it, and they answer any questions I have had so far.
Only thing is they didn't tell me the black ones are easier to play and sound better.
Keep pickin and I'll keep listening

I have a Carter S/10 Pad, love it, don't think I could part with it although I would like an Emmons or possibly a good U12. |

This year I got a used D10 Carter (the only other steel I've actually owned was made by a well known archtop luthier, John Zeidler, a dear friend who died of leukemia last year- a 12 string single neck w/ extended E9 tuning). I researched a lot and talked to various players and friends who had good things to say about them.
It was great out of the box, but I wanted to get the full compliment of 3rd and 4th string raises and lowers, so I added 2 knee levers to the C6 side, and also swapped out the George L's for Jerry Wallace TrueTones- the Truetones made a HUGE difference and improved what was a good sounding guitar into a great one! I had it in the famous Tom Cassella Basement of Push/Pulls and it sounded great among all of them- even Tom (who knows from great tone) thought it acquitted itself admirably!
The light weight really does make schlepping it around easier compared to a 95 pound D10. I'm really happy with it.[This message was edited by John McGann on 26 October 2003 at 02:34 PM.] |

I drove from Okla City to Carters at Dallas one morning. They had several D-10's on the floor so I asked John to play a few notes on each of them while my back was turned and I selected the one that sounded the best...
John and Bud tweaked my setup and Ann did the paperwork while I ate breakfast, and I was back on the road to Oklahoma City within two hours after arrival at the Carter store.
Played it that same night on-stage at my theater show without any familiarization and it was completely comfortable.
I'm still happy with it after three years.

Hi John!
I have four steels, all different brands. But I like my Carter most of them. It plays smooth, has a great tone and is lightweight.
Greetings from Germany,

I love my carter D10 8+5 navy blue formica,
I need to update the pickups and have BCT done on it but it sound and the fact that I don`t have to hand money to my chiropractor
really stands for it self, this guitar really stays in tune, I want to purchase another one someday, especially the new custom carters. |

John,
I own and play two Carters, one is pre-BCT and the other one is new and has it. My wife likes the sound of both, but compared back to back she says the new one with BCT sounds warmer and more inviting. They're both S10's, one with 3 & 5, the new one with 4 & 5. I'm very happy with them and the service Carter offers. The other day at the N.CA steel jam about half the guitars played were Carters. Other than myself, the other players who played one were, Bobby Black, Richard Sinkler & Tom Cooper. -- Marc |

I have a 1998 Carter D-10 8 & 5, Pre BCT,
I have had a Fender,2 Emmons,and a Sho-Bud
and the Carter fits me better than any of them did.
I have a very simple setup--The Carter,
a Goodrich pedal, and a Peavey Nashville 1000. The tone is there and the only person
I have to impress is myself.

I can tell by the responses to this post and the raft of E-mails that I have recieved that I picked a good company to build my steel. The folks at Carter seem to be in very good standing with the steel community. I see a lot of you have a second Carter. It seems to me T.W. also played a Carter at one time and maybe still does? I am really looking forward to getting my hands on one.

I have a Carter D-10, I bought it new last fall. Gets great tone with the XR-16s. Very light weight so it's my first choice for pickup gigs. Also records great in the studio too. I still love my PPs, but this new guitar is trouble free fun! |

I play steel for "David Church" David does a lot of Hank Williams tribute shows & loves the tone of my Carter on the Hank songs. I love it for the tone, durability & ease of set-up. A very sharp little S-10 with all the bells & buttons I need
