Here is a video clip of Gary Morse talking about using a compressor. You know he has tried everything over the years. You know he has seen what other Nashville players use in the studio. You know he has discussed it with them. He plays on records and in studios. Pretty sure using a compressor on a steel guitar is ok.

Of course it is - especially in a studio recording situation. Make sure to use a good compressor though, and set it well for the job. |

Gary is the utmost professional. His power is focus is very intense. Just a great pro steel player. One of the best out there both in and out of the studio. |

Using a compressor on a steel guitar is more than "OK" but using a compressor on a steel guitar before you have developed hand and VP technique is a skill-killer. Don't be trying to run before you can walk, and don't be using toys that you don't fully understand the use for. |

+1 ... it makes sense not to use what you don't understand, and therefore cannot master.
I added such units to my PSG sound-chains 25+ years after taking up steel-playing, despite knowing compressors inside/out after having used - and also built - such units in various studios for at least a decade before buying my first steel. Now they are the only permanent "effects" I use ... even equalizers are removed from the PSG sound-chains most of the time. |
