I listened to Hal's Alter Ego record on my trip home today. What a musician Hal was. Is there a interview of Hal telling how he came up with his E6 add9 tuning ? Love the man's playing.

Hal was truly a master play with licks that others still haven't copied. He was one of my favorites. Loved his style and attach. Don't believe Loretta would have gone as far without Hal's touch. He was also a great guy that would spend hours showing you a lick til you got it right . I miss him. Weldon was another of same caliber and so helpful to other steelers. _________________ Henry Matthews

Tony, I'm not aware of an interview where Hal discussed his tunings. But I'm sure you know about the Hal Rugg fan facebook page.
Also, Mattysvision.com is a Hal Rugg Foundation. You can peruse this site at:

Thanks George, yeah I know about the fan page and Matty's Vision . I wonder if Tom Bradshaw might know something about how he came up with that tuning. I'll get in touch with him. If I find anything I'll share it.

I re-released Hal's album titled "Hal Rugg Steels The Hits of Loretta Lynn". It was one of the albums in my Steel Guitar Record Club series (away back in the '70s). His copedent was printed on the album jacket. If anyone reading this has that album, that copedent could be published here. I have the album, but it is packed away in my warehouse.
My recollection is that his copedent was quite similar to everyone else's at the time (and even today). ...Tom
Edit: I just discovered that all of those Club records are on sale here on the Forum. Check them out on "For Sale, Music & Lessons...". Maybe the person who is selling them or the person who bought all of them can supply this information. |

I met Hal at PSGA 2000? and asked him and about "Altered Ego" and his E9/6 tuning. He said " that tuning had so much, I had trouble remembering it!" Listening to it, Hal seemed to be in total command! One of my favorites! |

Was this Hal's tuning for his career or just for this album? _________________ A.K.A Chappy. |

He used this tuning for several years then went back to C6. I met Hal in Knoxville Tn at Stoney Stonecipher's steel show in the 90's. I wish I had ask him about it. Such a nice guy and awesome musician.

Wonder why they put Hal's setup of the back neck on a Loretta's hits album when he did all her stuff on E9th. I think his E9th was pretty standard. I sat down at his Zum in Hot Springs one year and just basic E9th with 3 and 5 as far as I could tell. Hal was a super nice guy and one of my favorite players. _________________ Henry Matthews

I believe Henry is right about Hal using a fairly standard E9. I believe he also played "Day" style. _________________ Carter D10 8p/8k, Dekley S10 3p/4k C6 setup,Regal RD40 Dobro, Recording King Professional Dobro, NV400, NV112,Ibanez Gio guitar, Epiphone SG Special (open D slide guitar) . Yes he did Richard, he even volunteered to let me use his rig at Hot Springs one year.
I was used to my Emmons so I played it. Nice guy he was. _________________ Henry Matthews

Watching Hal Rugg pick on the Wilburn Bros. shows that are rebroadcast, he just whipped that honky-tonk sound out with real flair and individuality. No doubt who was playing when he cut. |
