Any ideas on the steel player on these recently unearthed recordings?

Sounds like Jerry Byrd to me. Jerry worked a lot with Hank before Don Helms came on board.

No, definitely not Jerry Byrd.

Most people seem to think it's Cousin Jody:

Amazing how different Hank sounds with a different steel player (all the previously released stuff featured either Don Helms or Jerry Byrd).

Cousin Jody seems likely. I don't hear any Byrd or Helms in the playing. The player really only has three licks that he is playing with, none of which relate to the melody in any way. Both Byrd and Helms would reference the melody in their playing.

Hank had a band steel player before Don Helms. I think he was from Montgomery, Al.

If it's not Jerry Byrd it may be Don Davis who played some with Hank during that time?

Thanks Jeff for the Cousin Jody (Clell Summey) link. There's an interesting bio of him here.
