Anyone use a small clip on tuner for casual jam situations, C6 and A6 tuning?
If so, which tuner(s) are suitable?
Thanks

Got a Snark, Chromatic. Had it for a couple of years. It works fine and is convenient to use for my tunings of A6, C6 and E13. |

OK - dumb question, but where do you clip it on? |

Almost anywhere. If I wasn't so full of fluid (skinny), I'd clip it on the back apron. |

Jeff, clip anywhere it will fit onto your guitar. It works on the vibrations through the body, so the placement isn't really important as the whole guitar vibrates when a note is played.

The ones I've seen seem to be designed to clip on to a regular guitar headstock and I don't think any part of my Stringmaster is thin enough.
Also, if I managed to clip it on to the thinnest neck, nearest to me, would the vibrations travel well enough from the furthest neck for it to work.
If I rigged it so it was somehow attached to the legs, would it work?
I think I'd have to find somewhere where it was visible to me but not the audience. |

Geoff,
Yes it would work on the legs. My friend has done so on his PSG.

I have clipped tuners to the tuning peg on a Stringmaster and had it work well. If you get two necks away from it you might need to move it! It won't stay on there during play, but you can tune with it. _________________ New FB Page: Lap Steel Licks And Stuff: https://www.facebook.com/groups/195394851800329 |

I'm not familiar with all the models mentioned here but my experience is that sensitivity, through the clamp, can vary between models and this is what separates good from not so good. I have an Intelli that is not so sensitive on solid body instruments (works fine on a mando) and I have a Snark that is far superior on lap and pedal steels. |

I have these four different clip-on tuners, all purchased new on eBay at the prices listed:
1) Fishman FT-2, $16.00
2) Snark SN-1, $10.28
3) GoGo TT-1, $21.24
4) Korg AW-2, $17.98
All of them work okay. I like the GoGo the best because of its multi-colored readout. Its larger screen is easier to read than the other three. It was the most expensive, however.
For anyone considering one of these tuners, a stash of 2032 button batteries is essential.

Jeff (got it right this time!)
Just to reinforce what Doug said, I just clipped my tuner onto the output lead about 6" from my lap steel and got a good reading.
Incidentally I paid about £2.50 ($3.50) for my Joyo tuner with free delivery. Not too much to lose if it doesn't work!
Keith.
Edit: Batteries have never been a problem and typically last for about 1 year. |

Experimenting with a friend's Snark I clipped it on a string I wasn't plucking/tuning. Outcome was good to my ears. |

I used to use the Intelli and had to play harmonics on the bass strings to get it to pick up. I use the Snark now for lap steel, Dobro, banjo and guitar. It's the first clip-on that reliably responds to the 3rd string on a banjo. I know, not a concern here. As previously advised, get some CR2032 batteries. I buy 100 at a time for 59 cents each. http://www.infinitelights.com/cr2032batteries.html |

I use a Snark. I have a couple of those keyless Magnatones. I clip it to the volume or tone knob. It works fine. _________________ "Don't be mad honey, but I bought another one" |

I prefer the Snark as well...I usually clip mine to the legs of my Fender...picks up the vibrations really well. |

I use my boss ME25.
But it does look interesting having a clip on that's viewable anytime instead of having to look down at the floor. _________________ Stefan

I have a SNARK and clip it on the Jack like Doug Beaumier does. I works fine for me the Jack position on my Melbert is front forward so it is right there where I can see it. |

My only complaint with the Snark Tuner (well maybe two) is that it turns on too easily and drains batteries fast. Reverb dot com sells a very similar Snark like tuner that you have to hold down a couple of seconds to turn on and off and seems to be better on battery life. |

My little Joyo tuner can be set for Chromatic, Guitar, Voilin, Uke and Banjo! It has the "hold down" power switch and as I only use it to tune-up or change tuning then switch it off, the button battery lasts for around one year. |

Be careful with clip on tuners and guitars with nitrocellulose Laquer finishes as there is a chemical reaction where the rubber on the clips melt into the finish. |
