It certainly is amazing.

The best I can do is, to hum a tune and see how close I can get on the piano. I have to have played the tune earlier in the day though.

I usually get quite close and, sometimes I'm right on the money. If I leave it for a while (say... a half a day, or so) I usually flub it.

I call it residual memory - for me that is - and after a while the sound of the note disappears from the gray matter. It's probably the same for most folks I guess.
