Jerry Byrd's brother, Jack, playing steel. I can't see if there's coat hangers pulling on strings. but there sure is a lot of A-B pedal sounds to his playing: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3jP5G5PaMrc#t=91

Yes, it sounds like "string pulls"... A & B changes on his Fender quad. Possibly one pedal to do both changes. Notice Buddy Emmons seated at his Bigsby in the background.

When Ray cut Invitation to the Blues Jimmy Day was sick and couldn't make the session. Jack Evins filled in for him and played a timeless solo. City Lights was on the flip side of the 45 but not sure if Jack played on that. How'd you like to have City Lights be on the "B" side of your latest 45 release?

Info previously reported by Robert Cramer:

The Ray Price Bear Family box set discography lists William Jackson "Jack" Evins as playing on 26 sides in sessions from 6/22/56 to 11/18/58. This places Evins between the Don Helms and the Day/Emmons era. In between the transition of Don to Jack is the 3/1/56 session that produced "Crazy Arms/You Done Me Wrong" w/ Jimmy Day. Buddy Killen, Tommy Jackson and Van Howard, who all appear in the "You Done Me Wrong" video, are all listed on the recordings Jack Evins is on.

Ray Price Nashville session steel players '55 -'66:

DON HELMS 2/8/52 - 10/28/55
***James "Jim" Biggar - (one 4 song session 8/28/54)
***Jimmy Day 3/1/56 - (one three song session: "Crazy Arms")

JACK EVINS 6/22/56 - 3/6/57
***Don Helms 9/3/56 - (one two song session)

JIMMY DAY 1/7/57 - 1/7/62
***Jack Evins (One four song session 4/6/58
***Jack Evins (One two song session 11/18/58

BUDDY EMMONS 8/26/62 - 11/1/66
***Jimmy Day (One three song session 2/6/64)
***Both Day & Emmons are listed on a 2/25/64 session)
***Pete Drake (one two song session 6/27/66 - unissued)
***Pete Drake (one three song session 11/8/66)

Some of Jack Evins' Ray Price work was released in 1957 on Price's first Columbia LP:
"Ray Price Sings Heart Songs" (Columbia CL-1015)

All of his Price recordings are available on Price's Bear Family box set.

Jack Byrd and I were stationed at Brookley AFB, Mobile, Ala. back in the fifties. We flew together on a few trips on C-54s. Does anyone have his email addy? Thanks in advance.

That was Jack Evins playing the steel on this copy. Did you see Buddy Emmons sitting in the back? Look like he was going to play for someone that night.

I believe Buddy was one of "The Country Boys" playing
for "Little Jimmy Dickens" at that time. Smile
