I remember a few years ago watching a video of Paul Frankin talking about the Little Walter amp he was using that it only had a tone knob. He said it didnt need all the tone controls that other amps have. I see the new amp the 89 I believe has a bunch of tone knobs. Why the discrepancy? Really interested in why he changed. Also, is there any difference between a regular 89 and the PF89? They look the same to me except for cosmetics. I'm looking to upgrade my amp soon. I really like the sound of the Little Walter amps I've heard on videos of different players. |

The amps you're asking about are two very different designs. The original Little Walter 50 with the single tone knob has octal preamp tubes with cathode biased 6L6 power tubes. A second tone knob was added to the design at some point. It has a warmer sound, and much less headroom than the 89. It is based on (or maybe an exact copy of) an early Fender Bassman circuit (5B6). Here's some info on that amp: http://www.thevintagesound.com/ffg/ Click on Wide Panel Bassman.
Search https://ampgarage.com/ for "Little Walter Amps" and you'll get several detailed discussion threads on these amps. There are also several threads right here on SGF.
The 89 uses the more common 12AX7 preamp tubes. The 89 looks to me to be similar to a fender Twin, with some differences in the preamp section. It has 4 6L6 power tubes.
The Little Walter 89 and Paul Franklin are the same amp. No difference at all. _________________ Tom Dillon

Phil Makes great amps! The early models were Variants or clones of Fender Bass Amp Circuits from the mid 50's Hence, Single Tone control and Octal Preamp Tubes. Then, Vince Gill Models were really Bass, Treble controls of the 50's Bass Amps.
After that the market opened up so all manners of tone stacks, Preamps & power levels were available from his company.
my understanding....
