I took the back off my Gibson EH 100 to be able to free up a very stiff Vol pot, which entailed taking the back off the pot and cleaning it and lubricating it.Problem solved,I took some pics of the internals for interested folks. These vintage Charlie Christian pickups have a tone of their own, this one from 1937 reads 2.23K and wound with 38 gauge wire.Of interest was the tone pot wiring a resistor in series with the .02 cap and a really interesting copper wire coil around one of ground wires.
Contrary to what I have read this guitar is not at all noisy no hum at all about the same noise level as my Bakelite which is very quiet. Also notice the pots are mounted to a grounded brass plate.
Cheers

Isn't it cool that a 78 year old guitar just needs some TLC to be back up to snuff? I wonder how many built this year will still be kicking in 2093!

That is an interesting wire-wound bit. Either they ran out of shielded cable that day, or I suspect it might be a later addition. Congrats on a cool axe!

I bet it sounds great! I have noticed that those PUs are very touch sensitive, that's what I like about them.

My Gibson looks similar inside. Different pickup, but the body appears to be about the same.
That body has a lot of little parts in it, and must have been a bit labor intensive to build, when other mfgrs were using solid wood bodies....
Mine seems to have a sort of acoustic ring to it (?)

That jack is interesting, haven't ever seen one like it..

It seems like Gibson went through magnet changes about every three or four years until they settled on the alnico design. There is a lot of info in the Gibson lap steel book.

I guess these old designs proved pretty expensive to produce, but its still amazing how this old pickup is still one of the most sought after especially for the Arctop jazz guys trying to imitate Charlie Christian.
All in all these Gibsons do sound fabulous.
