Are you fellows using the Quilter Toneblock amp using a preamp as well. I am thinking about getting one and want to just come out of a Benado Steeldream unit. Just looking for some advise

Seems like that would work perfectly. There are a lot of guys at thegearpage using them like this on 6 string. Steel>pedals>toneblock>speaker cab Really light weight powerful rig.

I now have one ordered after talking to a rep at quilter labs. I would still like to hear from steel playing users however. Thanks for the response.

I can't give you specific advice on the Quilter, but in playing around with several amps over the past few months, I couldn't believe how just a simple Boss GE-7 (7 band EQ) could give me a little more low end, or notch out something that was bothering me.

Don't be afraid to use something else like that for some EQ control, since a lot of amps (and I think this would be one, based on looking at the specs) don't have enough adjustments in that department (my opinion).

Good luck!

Thanks David that is good advise. My steel dream has separate tone controls on each effect. If that is not sufficient a separate eq could easily brought into the mix. I usually use a '67 Dual Showman head and an MB200 combo with an eps-15 Just want to get close to the Fender and lose about 35 lbs to haul.
Thanks, Billy

If you can pick up something/anything with parametric EQ's on highs and mids, and ideally two mids (low+high mids) with parametric EQ you will be in heaven. They shape the tone more... smoothly? Roundedly... Centerpoint of the frequency to be dicked with, bandwidth & volume of each part.

I have a Boss VH-1 rack unit that does it, the Digitech RP_50 and RP_55's will do it, a lotta rack stuff and several floor unit D.I. -type boxes. I decided a long, long time ago I wanted the same tone at all volumes, so the tricky balancing of power tubes and "coloring" speakers are things I avoid, not seek. I spent a long time playing with a guitarist who owned 7 - 12 tube amps, new and old ones in and out constantly, each next one was gonna be "the" one. He said you HAVE to use the right size amp for the venue, so he'd bring three and spend the gig carping about leaving the "right one" home. He would've been fired a long time back, but he could plug into a toaster oven and make it sing, whaddya gonna do.... Mr. Green

I am using the Tone Block in conjunction with a Sarno Octal Pre amp and the two are fantastic. I can use the eq on the Tone Block to further sculpt the mids of the Octal. And it is easy to get LOUD if you turn the TB up full bore. I usually set it around 60 to 100 watt range.

I am very pleased with the two of them.

Jim, I'd be interested to see how you have those 2 units set up. Are they in a rack unit?

Hi Rick,
Yes I have the v8 and Quilter in a rack. I am going to add a Sarno single space SMS preamp for guitar and have both instruments powered by the Quilter. It'll be 6 rack spaces of tone!

Well my Tone Block came in yesterday afternoon and I got to play with it some. Some kind of power, couldn't get above the 40 watt level in my music room. Today I will a/b the unit with the '67 Dual Showman with both coming thru the Benado Steel Dream.
Gigging three times this weekend so will get a pretty good idea of whether this combo needs any additions. Thanks to all who responded.

Jim how do you have the input level set on the V8 and the Tone Block? I'm having gain stage issues. I'm trying to do the dual guitar/steel rig also. How were you thinking of hooking up the two preamps at the same time to the Tone Block?

I carry the Tone Block at the shop and they are a wonderful addition to the arsenal at our disposal for sound reproduction- a basic tone structure and a 200w amp all in a very small package.

After a week end of use I am very impressed with the Quilter Tone Block. Very few knobs to turn but with My SteelDream unit with tone controls on each effect had no problem getting a great tone with my push/pull thru two JBL speakers. It is definetly a keeper and so easy on the load in and out.
Thanks for all responses,
Billy

HI Dyke,
Sorry for the delay but I am traveling at present. I found that I have to set the gain levels of the Tone Block LOW if I can to keep hiss & noise down. I set the V8 at 12 O'clock (as per Brad Sarno) and then set the Tone Block around 9 o'clock with the output somewhere between 40 watts & 100 watts. It is very quiet but can still be loud at those settings.

Once the Sarno SMS arrives I plan on building a passive A/B switch box that will insert after the pre-amps and will select either or both of the signals into the amp. I usually only run one amp at a time but on 3 songs I actually play lead & steel simultaneously and hence will need a BOTH function.

Rick,
It is a bit of a challenge, but I keep my Tele on my lap & switch back and forth between the two on songs like Friends in Low Places. I play the Tele with finger picks. You cant play fancy steel or complex guitar parts, but for simple tunes it works. You just gotta make sure you dont band the guitar into your steel.

Thanks for the reply Jim. I do the exact same thing playing both instruments on the same song quite often. I like having both on at the same time so all I have to do is turn up the volume knob on the guitar. I'm using a Boss LS2 in the A+B mode which makes it like a little mixer, but I suspect it's doing a little "tone suck". If you find a good AB switch that works good with both on let me know.

Any updated thoughts of the Quilter Tone Block 200 coupled to the Sarno V8??

One other way to approach the V8 into the Quilter Tone Block is to use the XLR output on the V8 using an XLR-female to 1/4" male (mono) plug to go into the Quilter. The XLR output is lower and may be a better match for the Tone Block's input sensitivity.
