On the Emmons LeGrande II D-10 I recently bought, a squeak developed that fortunately was remedied by just tightening a bolt where a leg meets the body.
I know it's a good idea to check the tightness of underside bolts now and then. Although I've done that in the past with my other guitar, I hesitate to do that on this one, without knowing if there is an ideal ft.-lb. reading with a torque wrench that I should shoot for while doing this regular maintenance.
I read that Buddy E. once had the bolts tightened on a guitar to the point where he noticed the tone being adversely affected. Fortunately he heard the difference, and could loosen the underside bolts back up a bit.
Thanks for any help,
Jeff |

I'd say body bolts just as tight as needed to keep them from coming out (too tight and you can strip the wood)... From what I've read (and my own personal experience tells me this), the tension on the neck bots did affect the tone (which makes sense-- too tight and the neck was choking off the body) |

Thanks Gino. I should probably clarify:
I'm most concerned about whether or not there's an ideal tightness for the neck, keyhead and changer bolts. Those are the ones I don't feel comfortable touching yet, although suggestions for the others are welcome also.

in my opinion, and others please chime in here!!) keeping the changer and keyhead, and endplates tight will only aid in tuning stability. you want them as tight as possible... (if you are unsure to the ft.lbs needed, check with Emmons as to what they recommend as not to strip etc)... as for neck bolts, let your ears be the judge..
Ironically, when I went through my push pull a while back and tightened everything up, I noticed the tone changed, and when I read the story on what Mr. Emmons did, I immediately went to ork slightly loosening the neck bolts,a nd the tone WAS back for me... |

That sounds reasonable. I think I will check with the Emmons company though, as you suggest. I have a hard time imagining that something like this could be left to the whim of an individual assembler. Maybe I'm wrong.
Thanks. |
