I think the greatest tribute to Gene is all the wonderful response to his Goodbye letter to us all. May God's blessings be with his family. _________________ Mullen Lacquer SD 10, 3 & 5; Mullen Mica S 10 1/2 pad, 3 & 5; BJS Bars; LTD400, Nashville 112, DD-3, RV-3, Hilton VP . -- Gold Tone PBS sq neck; Wechter Scheerhorn sq neck. -- "Experience is the thing you have left when everything else is gone." -anon.- |

I was able to attend Gene's service today. Guests were greeted with Steel Guitar Gospel music ahead of the service. An Honor Guard from Oklahoma City Fire Department stood at attention next a folded American Flag and framed displays of his military and fire department awards and decorations. The Fire Chief presented Charlotte with the American Flag that had been on the table. Taps was played by a representative of the Army.
His Pastor related he was "very moved" while visiting Gene several days before his passing. He said he would forever remember Gene's "peace" in his final days, and that he said he was ready for his next "adventure."
The Pastor also related that he had taken steel lessons as a young boy, but never achieved the level that Gene had. He always enjoyed talking steel with Gene after church services! He also had several cute stories through the years that were funny.
I don't think anyone likes going to funerals - but with Gene's faith in full view, his was more like a celebration of life than mourning the loss of one. |

I found this in Gene's back pages:
Post Posted 14 May 2001 7:32 pm
"Finished mowing the lawn about 1PM.... was in the hammock cooling off and taking a nap....phone rang, someone wanted a steel track added to ONE song for an album....went there, listened to the song twice while setting up my steel, (never heard the song before, someone said it was a cover of a Jim Croece number that had a steel on it)..... recorded the track in one take....... back in the hammock finishing my nap by 4PM......If all my work was that easy I'd NEVER retire."
Sounds like a good life. _________________ Those that say don't know; those that know don't say.--Buddy Emmons |

I would like to explain something to all of the Forum members, I had posted when Gene was saying goodbye and then deleted it as I had hoped he would make it and didn't want to face the truth. He was and is a dear friend and will always be just that to me, he was a wonderful Human being and GREAT STEEL Player as well..we spent much time in Saint Louis together and although I was having a most difficult time he was with me through it all Many times he said hence Jody, I love you, well Gene, I miss you so very much and my family feels the same as I Cowboy Gene there will never be another like you,
I hope to see you in that COWBOY CAMP MEETING IN THE SKY. Cowboy wait for me I'll see you again you can bet on that.
........Gene took a photo of myself and Marilyn in Saint Louis and our beautiful moderator Donna had it made in a bronze frame and is in the bedroom here and although Marilyn has gone home as well it will be with me Forever and then passed on to my family.........Donna Thank You
and Dear Charlotte God be with you always my thoughts are of you at this time and always will be. There will never be another Gene Jones Never!

I agree with Jody Carver's comments. I meant Gene in 1977 or'78 while I was working for Dave and Sugar. I recall Gene introducing himself to me and a couple of other band members after the show and we had a great discussion about Steel Guitar in general, and also his time with Conway. Many years later we got the opportunity to converse again from time to time on this forum. Gene had a wealth of personal experience and knowledge and shared it liberally with others here on the forum, his prescence will be, sorely missed. F.R. |
