Excel has a "road case" that it automatically includes with its guitars. Now, it doesn't seem quite as rugged or heavy as a standard road case, but it's entirely metal with braced corners, etc.

Well, I'm here to tell ya that it's solid. My U12 shipped in perfect condition on two medium-distance flights with a connection going each way -- and the only thing wrong was my 6th string was out of tune.

Incidentally, the airport inspectors left notes inside that they had inspected it both coming and going. I mean, what self-repecting terrorist WOULDN'T hide something lethal in a conspicuous, unusual-looking metal case?

I too have an Excel U-12 and I think the case is pretty sturdy. But the black tolex-like covering seems like it would scuff and tear real easy so I had a car upholsterer make a tight, form fitting zippered canvas cover for it. It's very much like the covers some people get for their acoustic guitar cases.I haven't flown with it yet but I've flown with guys that have charmed their way on to planes with big dreadnaughts in hard cases and either put it in the overhead bin or had the attendant stash it in a closet. The point is - the Excel is so comparitively small and light in its case that it might be mistaken for a tenor sax and would probably stash in an overhead bin. -MJ-

Michael,
Your case has a tolex covering? I'm surpised, mine is all metal and I thought they all were like that. Good idea about the canvas bag, tho.

My case is made from a sort of corrigated or honeycomb aluminum panel and then covered with some type of black vinyl material which to my mind is a bit stretchy and soft to be used on a case like that without eventually catching and tearing on something. It does have aluminum edging and steel corners like a road case and the hardware is generally top notch. The zippered cover I had made is a material called "Sunbrella" and is a canvas-like fabric used for awnings and boat covers, etc. It is impervious to water, sunlight, mildew, etc and is available in dozens of colors(mine is a nice blue/grey w/maroon piping). The cover has maroon leather inserts sewn into all 8 corners to help with the wear and tear factor(looks nice too). The zipper is similar to the ones used in wetsuits so the only place water could get in is thru the slot where the case handle sticks out.It keeps the stock Excel case looking new and makes it really roadworthy - not to mention seaworthy. -MJ-
