Hi All,
I'm looking for a nice looking bridge for a string-through body set-up for a lap steel build. Preferably something rounded so that it's easy on the strings. I know that some guys economize and use 3/8" threaded rod or whatever, but I guess I'd like form and function. I have not been at this building thing long enough to understand what Stewmac is offering, and they don't really explain the applications of the bridges that they sell. Any ideas?

What sort of string spacing and string height at the bridge are you looking for? |

NICE parts!!
take my advice. when you are building a guitar and you are only going to build one or two. when parts like these come up, buy them. you will spend more time than you want to on coming up with some design on your own that usually is not as good. you get your bridge and nut done and the rest is very straight forward. |

Good question Dustin. Probably 3/8" spacing at the nut and 11/32" at the bridge. Then either 3/8" or 1/2" string height.

Thanks George,
How does your round bar stock attach to the guitar? And do you have a link to purchase these parts?

Dear James ,
I am pretty sure you want 3/8 at the Bridge and 11/32 at the nut. I'm sure that is what you meant.
There are numerous ways to attach the Round Bar Stock, If you have a drill press or steady hand , you can make down holes and use Stainless Steel Screws.
You can make a wooden stop block the way DynaLaps did.
You can make a simple rounded router line in the surface of the lap steel.
You simply use some Glue.
Tom P makes a wooden unit with holes to create a cross shaft and a string retainer - awesome as all of his works.
www.georgeboards.com/parts.html is the sales link, for the parts you are asking for.
We send you an invoice through our paypal merchants account that allows for either paypal balance or credit card payment.
I originally made these round stock for 2 types of Lap Steels , --
The 1/2" I called Sustain Monster's, which they are.
The 3/8" I made my Modern RetroMaster D8 Consoles that are GeorgeBoard Versions of StringMaster.
Great Guitars , complete Flop sales wise - tons of people asked for a modern SM -
I made them as exacting as possible and No One Bought them- kinda funny really.

I have a design that's inexpensive but does require some build time.
It's a through body design using a piece of 1/2" brass rod with a flat mounted on top of a piece of 1/8" wall thickness angle aluminum. The angle aluminum anchors the bridge to the body and the brass rod floats on top of it so the intonation can be adjusted to a degree by a pair of screws into the brass rod. This is handy because it's tough predicting precise bridge placement.
I will PM you a PDF of the drawing. Just don't commercialize it. |

Thanks George, Looks like I have enough ideas. Now it's time to implement one of them.
