Reaching out to all the Hawaiian music and steel guitar experts on this one.
I'm curious to know which players used a 6 string or 7 and 8 string electric steel guitars on the recordings we hear from the 1940s , 50s and 60s. Famous (for us) and not so famous. I believe that David Kelii, Jules Ah See, Benny Rogers, Barney Isaacs, Biily Hew Len and Gabby all used 8 string steels. How about others? I' am very curious to know which used 6 string guitars. |

I believe David Keli‘i and Benny Rogers were for the most part 6-string players. I've not heard any 8-string work by them.
Barney, Jules, and Billy switched to 8 strings in the 1950s although Billy continued to use his famous 6-string gold frypan. I believe Gabby used 6 strings for all of his work with Andy Cummings in the 1950s, switching to an 8-string Fender sometime in the 1960s. |

David Kelii did in fact have a triple necked 8 string Rickenbacker tuned to E 13th, B 11th. & C 6th, in later years, earlier he used a Frypan for the Hawaii Calls series and added an Epiphone giving him two necks for that period. |
