In my experience, they are nothing exceptional, although some of the models look nice. I feel there are better instruments out there for the same or lesser price.
If you're looking for an inexpensive starter instrument, tell us your budget and we can make specific recommendations. _________________ Brad’s Page of Steel

Budget....?
Let me quote Roy Clark...
If they were selling Steam Boats for a nickle a piece
all I could do is run up and down the bank yelling...
Ain't that cheap!
I have been looking on line at a used Recording King
RR-60vs.... _________________ R.E. Baker

Morgan Monroe, lower end Regals, Johnson, Flinthill and others are sort of the second tier of the low end on resonators, the lowest being instruments like the Rogue that sell new at some of the online purveyors for about $200.
I think on the lower end Fender/Gretsch has done a pretty decent job in getting a playable resonator guitar across people's laps and the cone makes for a decent sound but some of the metal parts are pretty cheesy - there have been a number of stories of the thin trapeze-style tailpipe exploding. These go new (without the Fishman Nashville pickup) for $359 and I have seen them used online for under $300.
The next level up is a guitar like the Regal Black Lightning which comes equipped with an American-built high quality Quarterman cone, and people rave about these here on the forum and will write positive posts to help a seller with his listing, but I don't care for them when they are "stock," IMO they sound a little weak or there is something "muffled" to the tone - can't put my finger on it - just my take.
To me, the only imported resonators that don't sound and play like something where you're really giving away a huge amount compared to a nice American-built guitar are the Gold Tone/Beard and the no-longer-made Wechter/Scheerhorn. Sometimes you can find these used for as low as around $450 but you have to be patient. Night and day difference between these and the lower tier imports.
I have yet to come across a Recording King resonator, but I like their flattops, some nice guitars for the money. _________________ Mark |

I agree with Mark's analysis here. If I were looking for a starter resonator, it would be a gently used Gold Tone set up by Beard or Wechter/Scheerhorn. |

i played a couple new recording king dobros a few years ago. one was spalted maple and looked great but was kind of dead sounding. the other one was sunburst and really sounded and looked good for around $300, i think. |

I have a Morgan Monroe Bean Blossom that I bought for a price I couldn't turn down. I had Bobby Wright put in a Quarterman cone, a bone nut, a #14 spider and good bridge inserts. The results were dramatic. Not up to a quality built box, but good enough I'd walk on stage with confidence with it. In other words, a couple hundred bucks vs 5000.00. Not THAT great a difference. _________________ LeGrande II, Nash. 112, Fender Twin Tone Master, Session 400, Harlow Dobro, R.Q.Jones Dobro |
