Pickups: Blade VS. Individual Poll Peices

I know this is a much broader topic than simply one vs. the other, but is there a significant difference in sound between blade style pickups and ones with individual, non-adjustable pole pieces? Also does the diameter of the pole piece have much barring on tone etc. I am sure like most things, pickup components are all part of a system with many variables. Thank you for your input.
