I recently picked up a Fender 400 and, though it does have pedals, it doesn't really fall into the crystal clear pedal steel category. I play a twin for my 10 stringers but am looking into something different for this steel. Not crazy distortion, just a nice vintage tone. I'd rather not go and spend 4500 on a tweed deluxe. I've trolled the forum but wanted to get some other input. I could get a newer tweed combo, however, I want to keep it within cost reason. I have $$$ in all my ten string high power amps. Perhaps a sparkle drive (or the like) on my twin. I've seen mixed reviews on various models (HR Deluxe, Peavey Delta Blues, Carvin Nomad). I have a few great old 15" cabs loaded with D-130's so heads are also an option. Any advice would be great (yes, I know this is subjective).

What's your budget? How loud do you need to be?

How about using the Sarno V8 which would give you a nice tweed tone through your Fender 400.

Go vintage with your vintage guitar! Something like this old Brown Pro would be just dandy with a 400. Price is pretty good, too.

Is it the long scale (24.5") or the later short scale (usually sunburst)? If long, I can give you some tips regarding the guitar. You should check out the Fender Steel Forum, though there has been little discussion about amps there. Welcome to the Leo steel club.

You should look into the Supro amps. They come with 10", 12" or 15" speakers. I played one with regular guitar at a Sam Ash store and was very impressed. The best amp for clean sound for my long scale Fender is an inexpensive Fender SS FM212 (same as Frontman) after using numerous tube amps.

Thanks for all of your help. I sold all my vintage guitar amps when I started this steel endeavor. I'm looking into all of the options. Thank you. I'd like to stay under the 1000.00 mark.

I built a tweed 53e deluxe circuit box-o-parts from Mission Amps. The real cost is the transformers, cabinet + speakers. I built a head cab for my 5E3 from poplar & use an existing 1x12 speaker cab. I see tweed clones + semi-branded for $500-1000 in craigs list. There are a lot of them out there. If you don't need tube/spring reverb, it's ok. If you need reverb, the blackface deluxe reverb reissue is the way to go. <<1000 on craigslist & circuit is essentially a tweed + reverb & tremelo.

Tried a Fender Blues Deluxe or Blues Junior? The BJ, at 15 watts, will give you more distortion with less power. But the Deluxe, at 40 watts, would probably be better for non-miked giging.

Yeah - I am "upgrading" from a Blues Deluxe because it doesn't have quite the headroom I need for clean pedal steel. I say "headroom", it may be the input being slightly overdriven.

Les...Have you tried a more efficient speaker in your Blues Deluxe?

Well for me I love the sound of a Stereo Steel by Walker Electronics. It has all kinds of power and clear sound. G'Dog has been picking the steel for almost 40 years and his sound is revered by many. It is modular so it is easy to carry. Plus no where near 4500.00 and G'Dog will take care of you any time day or night. Plus he has been a picker for almost 40 years so he does know what a steeler wants to hear. Plus the Stereo Steel set up sound really good on just an electric guitar. My Strat never sounded better. I almost bought a Super Reverb to go with my Strat then plugged it in to the Stereo Steel, I never did buy the Super Reverb the SS sounded better. So there you have it . Take a real good listen if you can talk to Gerry, you will be so glad you did.
