This kid is pretty amazing! Here is a playlist of him in the studio, starting with GIANT STEPS:

"for me jazz is a calling. I love jazz because it's about freedom to express yourself and being spontaneous, full of rhythm and full of improvisation".

Earnest--Back in '73, GS was part of the methodology of my teacher in Boston. It seemed like a bitch. But it must be a sign of how far I've come that now it sounds so much more accessible. Much more harmonically simple than I remembered it. Cool!

I think the YouTube of JA playing Giant Steps at UDC is better than the studio cut: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4MA9r9V_Nzs

I just clicked on Earnest's link. I'm still recovering.

Anybody who can play My Favorite Things without me recognizing a note is all right by me.

All kidding aside, that child has a true gift from God. Thanks for the post, Douglas.

Oh, by the way, here is Joey Alexander playing "Giant Steps": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f4V_uaxBVOw

Keep on pickin'!

Cool, Brint! It's my understanding that he's playing his own arrangement. Here's another link of Joey Alexander (as a 9 or 10 year old) sittin' in with an Indonesian jazz band named Like Father Like Son (the bass player, who is also outstanding, is the son of the 'bone player):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ay96-qUB0Jo

Joey's playing reminds me a little bit of Hank Jones or McCoy Tyner. Watching these 'tubes has been a watershed for me - I'm a fan. Douglas, thanks again for turning me onto Joey Alexander! Very Happy

Keep on pickin'!
Glenn

Phenomenally good for any age. Wow! The main thing I hear is the deep musicality, something usually missing from kid virtuosi.

Also from the interview..

It's always a challenge to play. So I always focus on being simple. Every tune is hard if I want to play it right.
