Would anyone have any knowledge of the pick-ups used by Zane Beck when he was building these guitars.I have a BMI but the pick-up on mine has definately been changed on it.The pick-up there now is much thinner than the original and someone has put a switch underneath that will change the pick-up tone(Phase) to a thinner sound..I'm quite satisfied with the tone...just wondering?

My BMI that I bought from Mr. Beck in 1984 had a Bill Lawrence 705. Easily recognizable by its twin rails (as opposed to pole pieces) surrounded by a chrome wrap-around case.

Dale, om alot of the older BMI guitars the pickups were small compared to the pick up cavity. Also alot of them had a 3 way blade, tap switch for the pick-up. I have only seen the switches mounted in the endplate though.

Zane built a D10 for me in about 1979 and it had a double row of round magnets, single coils. He gave me a pair of 710's about a year later and told me to try them which I did. I still have the two originals out of the BMI guitar. I built a set of cabinets for the guitar. The guitar was all I had coming on the deal but he delivered the guitar, volume pedal, cords, a BMI bar which I still have and brand new Dalton Stone Pony amp with a JBL speaker in it. Zane was one of the finest, generous people I have ever known. He also kept me in strings as long as he lived and would not take a dime.

I had a BMI S-10 purchased new from Herb Remington back in the early 80s. It had a single coil p/u that I replaced with a 705. I dug around in the garage last night and found it! I snapped some pics of it and will post them in this thread either tonight or tommorrow. By the way Dale if you want this pickup you can have it.

A big thank you to Jon,B.Greg,Jerry and Earl for the info, The generosity and knowledge on this forum is second to none.
Earl, thanks for the offer on the pick-up I'll let you know by e-mail ,if I decide to take you up on that.... (further to the switch on my BMI)...I'm sure it is an old five position Strat. switch but it only produces two tones (in and out of phase I presume) but it works..... I would have loved to have known Zane Beck he sounds like my kind of people...
