i'm working on some licks from tommy white's video.
in one of the licks, he finishes with a pretty common phrase (see below).
he plays it fast, and i'm wondering how most people would pick this phrase. i've presented two options that make sense to me.

I'd say use your second example. Tommy and most pickers use that crossover method a lot. |

I'm sure this has been debated before, but it's something I find interesting. In watching folks like Mickey Adams...he appears to use his index finger regularly....I was at one of Larry Tolivers courses and his method uses mainly TM... Larry 's opinion is that you can gain more speed that way. Understanding that it will boil down to personal preference....sorta the palm block versus pick block....I'm interested is hearing some viewpoint...
Consider the can of worms opened... |

first off, i can't even get one lick posted without a typo...should be coming off the a pedal the second time.
part of the equation may be the tempo of the lick, and the feel. for some reason i use the first example when i play this lick at medium tempo with a bit of swing. it suits the phrasing, especially ending with the thumb, but also the drag of the two middle strokes that precede it.
when the lick picks up speed, the drag is too clumsy (at least the way i do it), and so i've been working hard at using alternating T and M for that. it sounds cleaner.
when i play scales, i've been using the three finger approach on 8-7-6 because it helps get the speed going, and sets you up for a logical approach to alternating the T and M when you get to the chromatic strings. the three finger approach doesn't work for me as well for this lick in particular (so far) because i find it a bit harder to palm block when i use three fingers, and i kinda miss the finality of hitting the last note with the thumb.
there are worms everywhere now! |

Dave, I thought that might have been a mistake, because it is a lick I've practice much while trying to master and squeeze as much speed out of it as possible. It took me a couple times to get it as written, but I play it the same either way. I am pretty sure using a rake could be faster, it is just not something I've practiced. I may have to give that some thought.
I have spent many hours trying to perfect cross over picking using T and M. Sometimes it comes off well. I think I've even posted cross over exercises among the many Beginners Notes.
Good food for thought, thanks for starting this thread. |

I play it the same as Dick except I use my index in place of the first two thumb licks... _________________ Always remember you're unique..... Just like everyone else |

Tommy regularly picks with thumb and index only...ive noticed this in several videos of him...Personally, thats what comfortable for him..I would use all 3 fingers and cross over thumb... _________________ ARTIST RELATIONS: MSA GUITARS
