A friend of mine recently received this lap steel and would love to find out what it is and what year it was made.

Thanks in advance, guys.

Interesting. My first thought is National. But when I view pictures of Nationals with roman numeral markers, the colors do not correspond (eg XXIV is green on National, white on yours). Plus the Nationals have more deco headstocks and other different features.

It's definitely not a National, but a very interesting attempt to ape one. It looks like a fairly professional build (i.e. not a home-made mongrel) but I don't recognize any of the parts.

I'd have to agree. Given the molded plastic bridge/pickup cover, definitely not a one-off. don't know if the knobs are original but they look like late 50's or early 60's Radio/TV knobs. The Japanese were big on copying American designs during that era so it might be something similar to the Guyatone "stringmasters".

Cool steel whatever it is. I'd agree with all of the above. Definitely National inspired, and as Noah points out, no common or recognisable parts. If I had to bet, I'd go with Bill that it may be Japanese.
