Gunna need ALOT more info: as the serial numbers are a shot in the dark(Sorry Shot; no pun intending>RIP).
For starters...does it say Pro III custom on the front?
Are the changer fingers Double raise/double lower..or triple raise/double lower?
Does this one have Wide pedals or narrow ones?
Ok that's just for starters.

Cool man...we're gettin' closer.
So what can you tell me about the pulling system underneath..?
Are they round crossbars with a flat spot?
How are the rods hooked to the pullers(Bell cranks)?
Oh and is it a raised or flat fret board on metal necks?
Is the inside of the case Blue or Red??

I would say the triple raise and lower makes it about a 1978 or later, but the wide pedals are strange.

There were a lot of "transitional" ShoBuds that combined features from one "era" that was about to end with those from the next, maybe just because they wanted to use up the parts leftover. If you look closely at the pictures of some guitars that Ricky restored, you´ll see what I mean. As far as I know, triple raise/double lower was first introduced in ´77, but wide pedals were in use here and there at least until the end of the decade.

That's alright pal....Marco and Joe have ya covered...as I would agree from your explainations...that it is indeed a '77 or '78...hard to tell exact year....>but certainly one of the first pro III custom.

My Pro III is SN 17866 and as near as I could find out is was made in the early '80's. It has aluminum necks, narrow pedals, hex cross shafts, triple raise/double lower changer, and no "teardrop" on the keyhead. It originally had Super Pro style knee levers, but I changed them to the older teardrop style with aluminum mounts. It says "Pro III" on the front, not "Pro III Custom".

I have a Pro III serial #10260 with an inspection sticker signed by Duane Marrs. It is an 8X4 greenish-blue with wide pedals and the cross-shafts have the flat spots. It is a 1977. |
