Are you doing it for looks, or to change the sound? If your MSA is an old "Classic" with a body made of die-board (a special type of plywood), you probably won't notice any difference in the sound when you add metal necks. Note: the "Classic SS" ("SS" for Super Small), is a different guitar, and I'm not talking about that one, here. (The "SS" designation has nothing to do with the pickups.)
To tell if the body under the formica is die-board, remove the endplate on the end opposite the changer. It's held on by 4 screws into the body, 2 screws into the front apron, and 2 screws into the rear apron (you'll have to remove the back apron cover plate to get to these two). If the body is made of the plywood die-board material, the end-grain layers will be easily visible.
Some of the Classics were made with a solid wood body, and with those, you might notice a small change in the tone (and a small reduction in weight) if you add aluminum necks. (By the way, only one or two of the old MSA's were built with the full aluminum necks!)[This message was edited by Donny Hinson on 16 September 2003 at 05:20 PM.] |

You can also usually see the plywood in the changer cavity at the pickup side. I had an S10 plywood and replaced it with a D10 solid wood and the sustain and tone difference was incredible. From my experience the plywood definitely deadened things quite a bit. |

The aluminum necks that I've made for the MSA's were designed by Reece and were made for the 12 string model and eventually became the design on the new Millenium series of guitars. One could be redesigned for the SS series for a 10 string neck however the cost might make it a bit impractical. |

Jim Boen passed away in March of 2002. Jim sold his guitar company to Roy Thomas about 10 years ago. Maybe Roy has some of those aluminum necks.
