So, I decided that despite 2 years of playing this instrument, there are some fundamental techniques that are still eluding me, so I decided to crack out some of my lesson books. I remember being confused by a few things that I am pretty sure are typos from the last time I did this. The first one is on page 11. Shouldn't this be a C Major scale?
I can't recall the other potential typos I encountered in the past, but when I do stumble into them, I'll ask. That said, if you know of some already, let me know! It might help to stave off some confusion down the road. Thanks! |

Yes, the tab shows starting on the C strings, going 2,2,1,2,2,2,1 frets... that's a Cmajor scale. If they'd moved up one string it'd be an Emajor scale. _________________ Too much junk to list... always getting more. |

OK, this one, I don't think is a typo, but I'm not sure I get it. On page 87, in the Great Speckled Bird, it's got two harmonics in measures 3 and 4. Are these both palm harmonics with the R.H. palm placed at the 19th fret and then the 12th fret?
Earlier in the book, it explains Palm Harmonics are notated with a P.H., Knuckle Harmonics with K.H., Finger Harmonics with a P.H. and Left Hand Harmonics with L.H. Har.
Now, I realize not everything is standardized in musical notation, but this particular thing in this song is not explained in the book, so I want to be sure I understand it.
Further, the book doesn't talk about palm harmonics anywhere except 12 frets above the bar.
And, most importantly, if that's what it means (R.H. palm at the 12th fret, bar at the 7th), that is REALLY HARD! I can't even fit my hand in there, really. And I can't get it to sound good.

Andy, I think it means play the harmonics first at the 19th fret with your palm, then move your palm to the 12th fret and play those harmonics. _________________ Links to streaming music, websites, YouTube: Links |

yes i would say those are standard palm harmonics - harmonics are found +5, +7 and +12 above the chord, so if the bar is on fret 7, then fret 19 = 7+12 and fret 12 = 7+5
and that 'Emaj scale' should be correctly labeled Cmaj
good luck - always nice to go back and build a good foundation in your playing _________________ '65 Sho-Bud D-10 Permanent • '54 Fender Dual-8 • Clinesmith T-8 • '38 Ric Bakelite • '92 Emmons D-10 Legrande II |
