Can anyone give me some advice on how to learn this skill?

I have a clip of my father doing here, at the 16 second mark: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r8DSY0IL3M0

It seems to be simple, but I'm not able to figure it out from the clip. It seems as though he's using two of the bass strings, but I'm not sure which ones.

I have gotten some input before, but I'm still having trouble grasping it.

Any advice is greatly appreciated!

I don't think it's bass strings. They're in the middle, like 3 thru 5, 4-6 or 5-7.
The key is in the syncopation, I think.
I apologize for being nowhere near my guitar.
