Here's a nice shot of Daniel Lanois' steel, taken by my friend David Newell just before last night's show at Crocodile Cafe in Seattle:

Yeah, I was trying to figure that out. Looks like the fretboard from a National Dynamic lap steel, at least it looks like that pattern. Last I heard he was playing his early seventies Sho-Bud LDG, but it sure didn't have that kinda fretmarker! Looks nice, though. I see he still has that piece of tape starting at the 15th to help him see where he is when the stage lights are on! _________________ "Just because you're not a drummer doesn't mean you don't have to keep time." good question.
i said that because with that fretboard colored the way it is, you'd be pretty aware of where you were on the fretboard no matter the lighting. |

Keep the finger picks from damaging the finish. |

There was a "rig rundown" from last year by Premier Guitar, and Lanois' Sho-Bud had a bunch of tape markers, including one above the board, from the 12th through the 24th fretmarks, with lettering of the full notes. Back then his fretboard had the card suits, club, diamond, spade, heart. Looked in this picture like the same steel, just with a different fretboard. I'm clearly no expert just fascinated with how other guys play and looking for ways that *I* can get better.
And every video I've seen of him playing PSG he's a bare-fingers picker. _________________ "Just because you're not a drummer doesn't mean you don't have to keep time." Thelonious Monk |

It's hard to tell from the photo, but it looks like a silver s10. Could it be a showpro? |

Just noticed it does not have a roller nut. But still looks like a silver-ish s10 to me. |

i was thinking gold ... and show pro. russ pahl has a gold show pro also. it's a little hard to see, but i'd think there were some rollers in there. i could be wrong. it's pretty no matter what.
i couldn't find it on the show pro site though. |

My comment was based on the apparent height of the neck. In the photo, the neck height doesn't appear to be as tall as it would be on a Sho~Bud. Of course, the photo was probably taken with a cell phone, and factor in stage lighting, etc. it's hard to tell how well the camera reproduces. Other than that, it does look like a Sho~Bud keyhead. Can't quite make out the changer, and in that light it appears to have a gold paint applied, not clear birdseye. Would have to ask the person who took the photo, or Mr. Lanois to find out for sure! |
