It was a fantastic show. Those guys can really play, I heard lots of people commenting afterward how they wished they could play one of those things.

About two minutes into any Campbell Brothers music, my face gets stuck in this big old grin.  No other band does that to me. It just resonates with me.

At around 21:00 on "A change is gonna come" I hear a Hammond but I see none, is it hidden somewhere or is it coming from the Excel steel? Although it's hard to match the bar movements with the changes.

I heard it too, at first like various strings in and out of phase, but it seems to persist, like a Leslie. Nice, if so.
It seems they're using an electronic drum track to kick off Love Supreme; seems to be on the drummer's foot pedal, and seems to kick it out at some point.
Interesting; very modern. Certainly, this is jazz beyond gospel, revealing jazz and soul's common roots in Africa.
Cookin', like King Sunny with a bigger bite.

Their guitar player plays a midi guitar and makes all sorts of keyboard noises..
I sat in with them once and on that tune he had an grand piano patch on, if I remember right.

Doesn't look like a midi guitar on this clip, though. I've seen them live three times and he had a Parker Fly on those gigs....
Maybe that one has a midi pup hidden, who knows?

Judging from my seeing them live and a few tell-tale fills ( the faster pull offs at about 24:20) I would say the organ tones come from Phil's guitar...

Even in that genre the pedal steel is used to emulate train whistle sounds. It has become our universal infamy.  |

I see what you mean Olli, you'd know, little extra guitar jimmysmithing,
But right after that spot, they all look up, same direction, like who did that.
These guys are thick as thieves; make me think of Tower of Power.
If they were in San Francisco, they'd be local heroes.
I've listened to this more in the last couple of days than anything else in recent memory. Thx to whoever posted.
Seriously, every time Love Supreme comes on the joint starts jumping and makes me want to get my keyboard out
and get that clap-track and some spirit going.  Seriously, better than Sun Ra with Frank Zappa.
I see how this stuff could change lives. This is church. They sing on steel. I've been converted.

Thank you Jon Light for posting the video and thank you b0b for starting the thread and linking the article!
I was stoked to find out that they are performing A Love Supreme and went to the website, but couldn't find any tour dates so I sent them an e-mail. And speaking of San Francisco, they will be appearing Tuesday June 16 at the SF Jazzfest and will perform A Love. The tickets do not appear to be on sale as of yet, and I don't know about b0b, but I am so there.
I just love these guys, and even more than their music, when I have been able to visit with them after shows, they are some of the nicest fellows I have ever met.
I've seen Phil using his guitar to make a pretty convincing midi piano sound, nothing cheesy about it at all.

Hi,
The Campbell Bros. are having great success and getting strong reviews with A Love Supreme. This has inspired them to pursue yet more material beyond their usual repertoire. In recent conversations with Chuck he has been very excited about the possibilities. It may take while, but they should have some exciting new music coming. Onward!
By the way, their bass player is Forum member Lonnie "Big Ben" Bennett's son, Daric. Lonnie has a lot to be proud of.
Lonnie will be at TSGA next week.
