| what kind of voltages are these things running at? if they are operating on standard low voltage circuits that things run on these days...i dont have hope for them. "starved" plate voltage tube stuff is not very good sounding. |

Don't mean to be a "party pooper" here, but the last thing I would want. . . is a tube that generates rich harmonics.
If my guitar generates harmonics and overtones that's fine, but I sure wouldn't want a tube generating them

But that's precisely why people love tubes with PSG and why nearly every professional guitar player uses a tube amp. It's why the best sounding and most expensive microphones in Nashville have tubes in them and why most of the albums we love had tubes involved with both the recording and the mastering process. Its why we love those classic Lloyd Green, Buddy Emmons, John Hughey, Jerry Byrd, and Jimmy Day tones (to name a few).

Just got in and saw David's post. Wish I could think that fast.
As Michael said, Brad hit the nail on the head and is correct of course, and the examples he mentions more than prove his point.
Tubes do provide a warmth and character that will possibly never be duplicated with other devices. The analogy I offer would be to enjoy a home-cooked meal at The Whistle Stop Cafe (where Fried Green Tomatoes was filmed) with it's squeaky wooden floor and weathered wooden booths. . . compared to a fast food place with aluminum window frames, formica counters, plastic seating, and restroom sinks that turn-on when you approach them.
Sorry for the misunderstanding, just didn't want the tube to start generating harmonics before I got there.
