I have 4 Herby Wallace cassettes that I would like to have on maybe 1 CD. Is there anyone who knows how to do that out there? _________________ Billy Knowles

Tascam CC 222SL MKII, will do it but I'm not sure if you can get all on one CD. After you get them on CD's you can transfer them all into one playlist on your computer. Herby's a monster. |

You first have to install an audio capture/editing program, one that is free and simple and works decent is called "Audacity" just google it and d/l the program. Then u will most likely need a 3.5mm ( 1/8")stereo phone plug to 2(r/l) RCA plugs to interface your PC's sound input(usually 1/8" phone jack) with a cassette deck output(2x RCA jack). After installing Audacity or whichever editor program u use, launch it and record the whole casette(s) on your PC side after side, as digital audio files in the format of your choice. You can then use the same software to play the file(s) back and "edit" them ie: add stops between each song, audio leveling, play with noise reduction, eq, etc. When u get it to your liking then u can burn it to a disc. Make sure the format u burn it in , is compatible with your intended playback device(s). This is obviously a bit more involved than using a 450+ dollar casette to disc recorder but it's slightly cheaper If u record them initially in CD-A format u will usuall get about 1 album on a CD-A disc give or take a song as this format is uncompressed and the same format used on factory CD's.Although most burnable CD-A media is labeled as 700 to 800 MB's per disc, not all home/car cd decks can playback overburned discs so it's advisable to keep the capacity to around 650 MB's for compatibility. To put them all on 1 disc ,choose an compressed recording format, the most common is MP3 which will playback on virtually anything albeit at the sake of some sound quality. They would all 3 easily fit on 1 CD-A disc. |

Storm, perhaps: I have a mic in on my laptop, no line in.
Will a line signal do damage unless it's well controlled (from a variable output digital recorder)? |

Billy, I can do it for you. It will require 2 CD's for MP3 files,
or 1 CD for data files. The files would be split so you could
play each file separatly. No searching like on a cassett.

Heck, I've got a deck that converts cassette tapes to CD's via my computer here. I've used it a bunch of times for that function. Works great.
As a matter of fact, I might even have at least a couple of the Herby Wallace cassettes that Billy wants converted. They're the instructional ones.
Anyway, I'd be glad to help you out. |

Hey Billy.
If I may add a recommendation for getting the best end results, make sure the cassette player you put the original tapes in for converting has had the heads and any metal tape guides and capstan cleaned and demagnetized to prevent high frequency "self erasure" and permanently affect the sound of the original cassette(s).
Since magnetic tape has fallen out of use as a recording medium, many people don't remember when a tape head demagnetizer and head/puck cleaning kit were essential maintenance tools for analog tape machines.
I still have my TDK cassette recorder head demagnetizer cassette and would be happy to loan it to you if needed. The rest can be done with Q tips and alcohol. Best wishes, Walter _________________ Emmons S10, p/p, Nashville 112, Zion 50 tele style guitar, Gibson LP Classic w/Vox AC30, Fender Deluxe De Ville and a Rawdon-Hall classical |

I haven't noticed that being a problem Charlie I figure the A/D converter senses the voltage and regulates it (pads it in old school)automatically sorta of a limiter if u will....just a guess |

Thanks, Storm, that's good to hear that the lack of inputs might be mitigated by accommodating line level electronically.
I'll take it as guess and approach it carefully. |

Another thing Charlie is the mic inputs on consumer quality PC audio isn't particularly high gain, so magnetic phono cartridges or low output dynamic/ribbon/condenser type mics don't have enuff output to barely drive the input much less overload it. |

I see, so what the pc supports low gain and it's kind of the line in range, no real worries then.
On a fairly new Sony (Vaio) laptop, one input would seem that'd they figured that out ahead of time.
Thank you so much. _________________ Those that say don't know; those that know don't say.--Buddy Emmons |

RC and others, if the tapes have been used allot and been stretched you might not be able to play dead over the fret, some have software to correct this, I dont. _________________ Ray Thomas

Or... "goggle cassete" to CD and find one. Pretty inexpensive from what I found.

Or u could spend an hour or so doing it with your PC instead of spending $, and actually learn something to do with your pc than email and post on a forum. This method applies to vinyl or reel to reel , virtually any source can be digitized and transcoded this way. Cheap direct transcorders are pretty much just that the more u pay the more control u have over digital file format ,bit depth, sampling rate, and some other processes that can produce a much better sounding file.Learning something u are unfamiliar with is definitely a Brain drain but rewarding (if u like to learn) if not a cheap cassette>CD that makes low-fi MP3's is likely your solution. |

Hi Stormy... I have no idea how to post a link but if you just google "Cassete to CD" it will work.
