There is a lick in Jeff Newman's steel guitar rag that goes from the 5th fret to the 17th fret. What is the BEST way to move the bar for that lick? Thanks _________________ GFI Ultra SD-10; Nashville 112; Hilton pedal, George L Cables; Pearse bar; Live Stings;Walker seat by Billy Knowles. |

Uhh...just slide it, maybe?
Course, you could also pick it up while sliding, depending on what effect you're looking for. |

Thanks Donnie. I guess I need to work on my blocking as the move is not clean. Ive tried picking the bar up too. I want to practice the correct method. _________________ GFI Ultra SD-10; Nashville 112; Hilton pedal, George L Cables; Pearse bar; Live Stings;Walker seat by Billy Knowles. |

Gary, I find for analyzing things I hear, YouTube or something similar is an incredible help. I get to the part I want to learn, set the cursor on the moving dot, and keep the cursor at the spot the part starts - also note the time (1:32 or whatever). Then I just keep clicking back to the start of the desired part over and over about 6 or 8 times, like a broken record. This fixes the desired sound in my head.
Then go to your steel and just try different things to see what works, and you may have to return and listen another bunch of times before it's done. But eventually I can fine-tune what I do on my steel to what I am hearing.
Your mileage may vary and to some people it may sound silly. But it works for me and I offer it not as gospel but something which may help you. |

Hi Gary,
The best way?....= slide. Once you've mastered the art of blocking, you won't have any problem doing that long slide. The idea is to NEVER lift your bar off the strings during playing...... sure, there will come a time, but, only after hours of practice... sometimes you want the slide to be audible....so, practice both ways of doing it. _________________ 1970 P/P Emmons D10 flatback 8x5, BJS Bar, J F picks, Peavey Session 500, Telonics pedal.
