I own several Goodrich L120 vol pedals but they've been serviced so much I'm not sure what the original setting should be.
I'm referring to the pedal up position. Should that be zero volume, producing less than maximum full volume (due to string travel) or tie the string for max volume with pedal down but accept a very low signal still coming through with pedal up?
I'm pretty sure you can't get the string to twist the pot from totally silent to 100% full signal...correct? _________________ Sierra S10 (three!), Peavey 112 and 115, Benoit dobro, Beard Model E dobro, Beard Roadophonic, MSA Superslide, Dean Nickless custom dobro |

Correct, They design pot pedals so that the string can't fully turn the pot the full 300 degrees. They design them to be just under 300 degrees so the pot doesn't bang against its internal "stops" as that could eventually damage the pot. People have different tastes. Some prefer the heel-down position so that it's completely off, and others prefer when that position has just a tiny bit of sound passing thru. It never fully turns off.
Personal preference.

Turn the amp volume up - like all the way. Then you won't be worrying about that last teeny bit of volume you might lose when the pedal is all the way down, and you'll also have a pedal that goes all the way off.
(I always run the pre and master wide open, even when practicing quietly in my house.) |

I prefer for the volume to be a little on when it is in the down, off position. I want it to go immediately when I give it "the gas". If you set it a little less than the lowest volume that you would ever need, you are good to go. Sure, you can hear it a little bit when it is supposed to be off, but it doesn't matter, since you will never play that low anyway.
Also, I turn the amp volume all the way up and control the volume with the pedal. I want the pedal to respond quick like a sports car, not sluggish like a log truck.
As Brad said, individual preference. No really right or wrong. |
