This past Friday evening we played at a big fund raising event in a large hall we've played in many times.
At the last minute, I decided to take my old Fender Steel King amplifier, which I haven't used in quite some time. Before loading it into my car, I plugged it in and made sure it was working well, which it was.
It was an early gig and we all have day jobs, so we pretty much just had time to set up and play...no sound check. I set up my guitar, plugged in all my gear and set the tone controls on the amp where I usually set them.
During the first few songs, I noticed I wasn't playing as loudly as I needed to (large hall, no mics on the amps), so I ended up cranking up the MASTER all the way and the GAIN way up past 50%. I figured that would do it, which it did. I was just surprised that I had to crank everything up so high.
At some point, it dawned on me to check something. Sure enough, the doofus user (me) had not not noticed that the -10db pad button was pushed in (turned on). I turned off the -10db pad and all was much better...way more volume than I needed.
Next, I noticed that my amp had kind of a washed out sound, like too much reverb. I was using a little EH Holy Grail reverb pedal. I kept backing it off until it sounded better; however, it was turned almost all the way off.
Then the doofus user (me) noticed that the amp's reverb was cranked way up. I turned it off and adjusted the Holy Grail unit and all was well.
The rest of the evening, I noticed that some of my rides were kind of "choppy" sounding, with regard to volume. It sounded like I had never used a volume pedal before. Too loud, too soft, too loud, too soft.
Then the doofus user (me) noticed that the Limiter button (compressor) was pushed in. Every time I tried to bring the volume up it was fighting me and turning the volume down. I turned off the Limiter and then all was well....but that was about 30 minutes before the end of the gig.

For myself, I call it "stage stupid". I can trace problems systematically and usually pretty easily unless I'm in the middle of a gig when something happens. Then my mind gets into some sort of panic state and I'm stumped over the simplest problems. |

Well Lee, the trend now is to have a stage name. I adopted the name of Rusty Strings. You could use Doofuss Youzer.

I've played several local steel shows and most of the time I borrow an amp from some one there. I got the chance to play through a Steel King and was happy about that. When I was testing the sound, it sounded awful, way too much bass even though I cut it way back. I figured, oh well, I'll muddle through it. It was then that I looked at my Steel Rider and realized that, the tone control was way over towards the bass side. Once I rotated the dial everything sounded great and the Steel King performed flawlessly. I always double check all my stuff from now on. Little simple things can really mess up your day and hopefully can be fixed without a hassle. A momentary brain fart on my part. Hopefully, never again. |

We are playing for a local Rotary Club CajunFest tonight. Usually about 800 people or so attend.

I believe I'll try using the Fender Steel King again!

I know it's not the flavor of the week, HIP STEEL AMP but I love my Steel King!!! It's reliable, and I get complements on the tone (it SURE ain't my playing!!!) Sam Marshall has always been there to answer any questions I would have about it. I could never complain about Fender's customer support. If only it were 50% lighter! Oh well you can't have everything and if you did where would put it??? |

The Fender Steel King worked flawlessly.
It helps when the user has the amp and f/x units set properly.

Not a Steel King related story, but a "Doofuss" story I watched one night awhile back.
Hot Shot guitar player showed up with his VERY expensive tube amp head & speaker cab and a pedal board that could have doubled as a card table!!!
This thing was at least 4' wide and 2 1/2' deep and had only the best, most expensive stomp box's, covering the entire surface of this monster.
There were more 12" cables than I have ever seen in one place before snaking through every nook and cranny between the stomp boxes hooking them all together.
He plugged his guitar in and tuned up with the tuner on the pedal board and when he was done tuning and hit a big ol G chord to check it....No Sound!!!!!!
He stepped on the Vol Pedal..No Sound!!!!
He turned up the Vol knob on the guitar...No Sound!!!
He turned up the Vol knob on the Amp...No Sound!!!!
He un-plugged & re-plugged all of those 12" cables...NO Sound. He was sweating bullets by now.
As I was walking across the back of the stage to get to the stairs and go grab a soda from the bar, as this problem seemed like it was gonna take a while, I noticed that although he had plugged the cable from the amp's speaker output jack in...he had not plugged the other end INTO the speaker cab!!!!!!!!!

Jim... He probably thought that cord was the antenna of a bluetooth transmitter. _________________ Carter D10 8p/8k, Dekley S10 3p/4k C6 setup,Regal RD40 Dobro, Recording King Professional Dobro, NV400, NV112,Ibanez Gio guitar, Epiphone SG Special (open D slide guitar) .
