Did anyone see that great John Oates special on Paladia last night? Great music delivered by expert players and singers! Of special note was Russ Pahl on steel; beautiful playing, very tasty and perfectly in tune. Anyone know what steel Russ is playing on that show? It looks like some kind of vintage machine, but sounded like a modern E9 tuned steel to me. Shane Theroit was awesome on guitar as well. Check it out!

It has a white Sho-Bud fretboard, but it may be something else underneath. Maybe Russ will enlighten us…

Russ Pahl is one of the finest musicians and steel guitarists out there today. That's his custom, one-piece/no laminate top Show Pro guitar that he's almost solely used the past two years(He still has the push pull and another really cool gold Show Pro too) Russ tunes his steel down to an Eb9th and uses heavier gauge strings to create his sound.

You guys got to hear these new guitars that Jeff Surratt is building with the one piece wood concept. It's only been done on single neck with a single frame guitar so far. But it has everything going for it in the positive. Bigger/deeper tone, even balanced EQ all across the fretboard on each string, tons of sustain, and they're really loud too.

Unfortunately you can't see this guitar which is the nazz.
Be nice to know what the knobs do.

Barry, that's the one! Charlie, he's using that pink guitar on that particular session with his silverface Fender Princeton.

Charlie, the knobs don't seem to be labeled, so what they do may be Russ's secret..Winking

Wow, that's the beast! What a great sounding steel (in the right hands, of course). I love the retro-vintage look, and only two pedals? I could have sworn I heard Russ do some very B&C-pedal sounding moves on that show... maybe he has that change on a KL.

His tone and intonation are superb.

Gary, his E to F RKL actually goes a whole step up to the F# and can cover the C pedal change with pedals A and B.

Eddy,

Thanks for the insight. I have dug Russ's playing since first becoming aware of him back when he did the Vince Gill DVD show at the Ryman. Outstanding player!

Very Musical! This is the kind of approach to playing that will keep steel players in business in the future. It crosses the line from only a country instrument to a versatile instrument like guitar… You can't just add distortion and play country licks, its a different mindset… I personally love it. I'll add that we need to thank Jeff Surratt at ShoPro for being willing to build instrument like this… Very innovative on both their parts!

i dunno man. i heard some rough spots and clunkers in there. which to me would mean they gotta do a whole nuther take since they're playing live.
but russ pulls off the 'yeah man, so i guess we're good then?' thing like a pro. Smile

Russ was probably direct to the board, and if so, he could just punch the spots as needed. A engineer with good Melodyne skills could probably fix it, I have had good luck fixing tracks with Melodyne, it is amazing!!!

i hear you jim. i've had many sessions saved by talented engineers.
i'm just saying russ may not actually be a god either!

i wondered if this track of little wing was to have vocals done later? without them it would have been
a little sparse.

Great pic, Barry.

The "Guitar Face" really hasn't changed all that much in the last 30+ years (or has it?):

I can assure you that Russ was playing through an amp(Probably a Princeton like he normally uses) and not running a direct line where an engineer is using melodyne. I've heard raw tracks in pro tools from guys who've had him on a session and I can definitely say that his sound is pretty much up and ready from the recorded track(he does all of the delays and effects, etc) I like melodyne and think it's useful for mixing and treating some things in a subtle fashion. But steel guitar is something that just can't be auto tuned with a click of a mouse and expect to sound normal.

Chris, I can tell you that if Russ couldn't cut it he wouldn't be getting the session calls… There are too many great players in Nashville for them to have to tune his parts.. Russ is an innovator just like Day and Emmons were in their day… What we saw in the session video was more than likely a staged shoot. Even if it wasn't I'm sure he got a second shot at it with an overdub… What counts is the end product, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EOl85NPrFcs , that is something totally new….

I got the impression that they were just blocking out Little Wing, trying a new arrangement.
It was hard to tell what the final product would be, vocals maybe, leaving space for that.
I thought it was a pretty cool groove, you could dance to it.

Pahl and Oates! Smile
