Knowing they're George L's, which GFI p'up is closest to George L's models, i.e.:
GFI 1 closest to E66?
GFI 2 closest to 10-1?
GFI 3 closest to ????
Again, as far as the GFI 1 & 2's, I'm asking. And how does the GFI 3 compare to the 2?
Also, I'm asking which GFI p'up is warmest in the high end. I've played the GFI 1 which to my ear is a bright/snappy p'up, & to me, that's a good thing.
I'd appreciate Uall's take on the GFI 1/2/3 p'ups. Thankew! |

hi rex,
i have george l e 66, gfi 2 and gfi 3and checked them all.
to me the e 66 is the brightes, good but a little edgy
gfi 2 the mellowest, warm sounding
gfi 3 the best overall, having crispy highs and big bottom.
hope that helps
i use truetone siglecoils on my gfi s, for i like their sound pretty much |

Ive got the GFI I & II and Truetone single coil. Haven't tried the GFI III.
I like the Truetone single coil better.

rex, you also have to consider a singlecoil (truetone will have some hum)
the GFI 1 2 3 are dead quite.

| I like the response from a gfi 2 pup for playing along with backing tracks alone to becuase of its nice mellow sound but for high volume band mix I found I was overdriving it on my Nashville 112 to get enough volume. Maybe I just needed an amp with more clean head room I guess. Still I like gfi 2 pickups. I will be trying the gfi 3's soon. |

I finally got to try out the gfi 3 pickups and they are to my ears somewhere between an E 66 and a bl 705. More like the 705 than the E 66. I dont hear quite the same sheen or brassyness that I hear on the 705 but everything else is there. You get the crystal clear clarity that you get with the 705 which is the main reason I like it over the gfi 2 pickup. The string seperation is the best of any pickup I have played thus far. Highly recommended for those searching for a pickup who like the 705.

I tried all the GFI pups and I then used an Alumitone and it was fine and exceptionally responsive to EQ but then tried a 705 and Bingo. This was over a period of quite a few years. Fitting a 705 may require a bit of routing underneath to get enough string clearance depending on how old your GFI is etc. as they do vary a bit in string/body distance. All the little niggles disappeared and and at all volumes. Tone was just right however some of the others had good tone, especially the Alumitone but there were aspects that were just hard to play with. The 705 allows you to forget about the pup and just play. I do use an E66 in my JEM U12 and it it good but still not as comfortable to play with.
