I listened to a few of the other songs and there is some Steel playing on this one:

Red Rhodes played the steel. The guitar player, Martin Stone, was in the group Mighty Baby before and played a Gibson SG. He switched to a B- Bender Telecaster later for this record.

Thanks for posting this, Joachim. Never heard it before. It's great!

Apparently the Last Train to Hicksville must have taken a sidetrack to the British Isles somewhere along the line.

"Choo Choo Ch'Boogie". The lap (or console) steel was played by band member Snakefinger:

Here's my Dan Hicks impersonation:

"Hey you! Yeah, you with the pedal steel! You're in the wrong place. There's a shit-kicking dive across the street - that's where you belong. Oh, you're in the opening act? A half-hour set? Ain't gonna happen. I'll give you 20 minutes, that's all. Then get off my stage."

Mad

Sorry for the diversion. Just had to get that off my chest. Embarassed

How 'bout the GRO (Great Recession Orchestra) from Texas (Oh yeah! Cool ) with two alumni from Dan Hicks and his Hot Licks, as well as Asleep at the Wheel? The two alumni? Well, none other than that sultry-voiced chanteuse, Maryann Price and the imperial icon of the ivories, Floyd Domino. Ray Austin is the dobro/steel picker for GRO

"Chinese Honeymoon" from Have You Ever Even Heard of Milton Brown?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JBjgHqKerNM

"She Ain't No Good" from Double Shot, by the GRO:

and live at the Sons of Herman Hall, Dallas TX:

Keep on pickin'
Glenn

Maybe he thought steel was an instrument played by hicks.

Sounds like he was intoxicated.
Fwiw, The stock answer to that comment is...
"Every song you ever recorded would have sounded better with Pedal Steel Guitar".

Jay Leach is on this Dan Hicks album:

Yeah, I was too shocked to respond. He belittled me over the microphone during his sound check, as I was loading in. He wasn't drunk - it's just the way he is.

I used to play with Naomi Eisenberg, who was in his original band. He came to one of our pitiful little gigs and sat in the front row, harassing and heckling her all night. The guy has no class at all.

(For the record, that wasn't an exact quote or anything. Just my impression. I don't remember his exact words, but his meaning was very clear.)

b0b, first problem, he started out as a drummer. Laughing
Now 73, I doubt he is relevant anymore, so not to worry.. Winking

From his bio at http://www.danhicks.net/bio.htm
"Dan's irresistible sense of rhythm, hip lyrical styling, laid-back vocalizing, and infamous on-stage wit will make most who listen fans for life."

I tell you, Joachim, sometimes I'm slow.

You should have called him a one hit wonder, b0b.
Some of these bigheadliners think everybody acts like that.

Saw Dan and his hot licks a couple of months ago. He acquitted himself pretty well. No snarky remarks publicly anyway. Smile

Infamous on-stage wit.

Or b0b could have told him he should be in the witless protection program.`

This cover by Thomas Dolby was a minor hit I believe. He was quite an influence for some.
