A friend of mine owns a 40 year old Rusler pedal steel. He's concerned that the original pickup that is still in it has lost some of its power and tone. He's thinking of replacing it, but wants advice on which replacement pickup to get. He has heard of the Lace Alumitone pickup, but wonders if there are other pickups with a better sound. He would appreciate all points of view posted here regarding the problems or pitfalls to keep in mind if he decides to replace the pickup.

i would think much of the cool tone of rus-lers and zbs was the combination of the original pickup with the guitar.
maybe someone can refurbish that pickup.
..and see what kevin hatton puts in his retro zbs.

You might try Bob Hoffnar's " Tonealigner " pick ups. They have adjustable poles like the original RusLer and ZB steels do. I believe he can even triple tap them for you. My S-11 RusLer has a triple tap humbucker in it . I don't know what it's wound to, though.
BTW- it's still the original pick up.

Tom.. Keep it original and send it to Tom Brantley.. He does magnificent work on ANY kind of pickups, and is very reasonably priced indeed...
Check his facebook page as well.. He does any kind of pickups and does them all very well, at less than half the price of a new pickup.. He has rewound old Fender pedal steel pickups for me as well as old oddball DeArmonds and stuff like that, and they came back as good as the originals... bob
