A recent thread on 10 string tunings got me thinking about mine.
I dug out my 10 string console yesterday, which I had tuned like this. I liked it OK, but the lower register wasn't as useful as I'd hoped.
I tried 5 of 6 different variations on the lower strings, but couldn't find one I really liked. About 10:00 last night, this idea came to me:
While it doesn't give me anything "extra" or any "new notes / chords" in the lower register, it does give me the ability to play any song that I can play on 6 string C6 in 2 different octaves.
Since a large part of what I play are songs I learned from forumite Doug Beaumier's two GREAT books on 6 string C6th, this tuning allows me to play one verse in the standard register, and the second verse an octave lower.
I don't know if I'll stick with it long-term or not, but it's been fun to toy around with so far. Thought I'd share. _________________ Some songs I've written |

Interesting idea, Steve. It reminds me a little bit of G dobro tuning, two identical chords, two octaves: D, B, G, D, B, G (high to low). Thanks for mentioning my books. I'm glad you're enjoying them! _________________ My Site / My YouTube Channel

Hi Steve:
I too run through Dougs books daily, they are plain super!! Patiently waiting for the 3rd one soon from Doug.
I have a T6-8-10 that I may try that on the 10 string neck. Did you then use string gauges from high to low of 14,17,20,24,30,36,42,54,60, & 70?

It's currently strung with these gauges (as this was how I previously had it tuned):
If I stick with this tuning long term, then when I re-string, I'll go with appropriate gauged strings from this chart. _________________ Some songs I've written |

I've found another use for this tuning.
I normally play "Just a Closer Walk With Thee" in the key of A. That's the key I sing it in, and when our Gospel group plays it as an instrumental, we also do it in the key of A.
I always play the first line like this:
At a jam last night, we had a lady there who wanted to do the song, only she does it in the key of E. On a 6-string C6th, I wouldn't have had enough room on the fretboard to get the "iii-biii-ii" transition on "walk with Thee". (Yes, I know I could've played it from the 16th fret "E", but I prefer the lower register on some songs).
Using this new tuning on my 10-string, I was able to drop to the lower register and pick up the notes like so:
I can see how this new tuning will come in handy at informal jams & get-togethers where I may be required to play a song in a different key than I'm accustomed to. _________________ Some songs I've written |
