Anyone using a small mixer + powered PA speaker instead of a regular amp for steel? If so, what equipment?

Not quite that combo, but I am using a QSC K10 I believe that is the number. I am using Brad's Octal preamp to drive it. Lots of power and incredible sound. A lot of folks don't like have a high frequency speaker in their setup but I do and with the treble reasonable low, the high end just sparkles.

Here is an example of what you could expect.

Scott - For playing at home in my music room, I use a PreSonus Studio 16.0.2 mixer out to a pair of Dynaudio BM5A powered studio monitors. I also use an Octal V8 preamp between the steel and the mixer. Sounds great for home use!

Mickey Adams was using QSC 12's at one time. Maybe he will chime in.

Good responses! Mickey, do you think the 12's handle the sound well, or would the 15's be better, as far as range?

I have done it before, but I don't like the tone of the steel guitar through the tweeters (piezo horns/hi freq drivers etc.)
The high end is too sterile and harsh sounding. I suppose different speakers and eq settings could make it better. But I prefer the sound of a good quality guitar speaker, with a smooth warm sound.
